This battling knock from Sanju Samson was one of the best of IPL 2021. The Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Rajasthan Royals were playing their first game of the tournament. After opting to bowl first, PBKS had a brilliant start. At 89/2, skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda joined forces to produce a 105-run stand. With both exhibiting clean hitting, PBKS posted a majestic target of 222.

In response, when RR started their innings, both Ben Stokes and Manan Vohra were dismissed cheaply. The dynamic batter, Jos Buttler, was dismissed for 70. With 152 runs more needed to win, Samson stitched two partnerships. Looking to bat till the end, the skipper then exploded in the last few overs.

By single-handedly controlling the chase, Samson scored 36 out of the remainder of 42 runs in just 14 balls. However, he could not see the team home. He was caught out off the last ball with the team needing five runs to win. The centurion (119 off 63 balls) struck seven sixes and 12 fours. Despite the loss, Samson was adjudged the Player of the Match for his stellar innings.
