Four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went the extra mile in the mega auction 2022 as they snapped up Deepak Chahar for whopping INR 14 crore (INR 140 million), making him their most expensive buy in the IPL history. The fast bowler wasn’t retained by CSK ahead of the mega auction as they went for skipper MS Dhoni, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali, and opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad. The pacer has always played alongside Dhoni as he was a part of the now-defunct team Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017. Since 2018, he has been playing for the CSK franchise and won the title with them twice – in the first season itself and in 2021. The star Indian fast bowler became the second-most expensive buy after Ishan Kishan in the mega auction 2022 held in Bangalore.

Chahar was roped in by CSK for just INR 80 lakh in the 2018 auction and has snared 58 wickets in 58 matches for the Chennai-based franchise. The right-arm bowler had a base price of INR 2 crores in the ongoing auction but saw his price rise seven times as there was an enormous bidding war between Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings. But CSK went all out to buy back their player and secured his services for a staggering amount.

Deepak Chahar became the joint-third expensive Indian player in IPL auction history

A fierce four-way bidding war finally ended and saw Deepak Chahar becoming the joint-third expensive buy in the history of IPL auctions. Yuvraj Singh is the costliest Indian purchased in the IPL since its inception when Delhi Capitals broke the bank for him and bought him for INR 16 crore in the 2015 IPL auction. The second costliest Indian was bought in the ongoing mega auction 2022 itself when Mumbai Indians brought back their dynamic wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan for whopping INR 15.25 crore. Legendary Yuvraj Singh was also purchased for INR 14 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore back in the 2014 auction as he is the joint-third expensive Indian along with Deepak Chahar.

Meanwhile, each team will play 14 league matches in the tournament and should we consider Deepak bowling all his quota of four overs in those matches, the pacer will end up bowling 336 deliveries in the cash-rich league. Add three more matches (Qualifier 1, Eliminator, and the Finals) of the play-offs, then it makes 408 deliveries in 17 clashes in the IPL 2022. These are all scenarios and assumptions-based numbers that could well turn out to be true in the end. Sold for mind-boggling 14 crores, his every legal ball will cost around 3.43 lakh if we go about this scenario.
