Mumbai Indians signed off their IPL 2022 campaign with a five-wicket win over the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 21. Thus, they registered their fourth victory of the season and finished at the bottom of the points table with eight points to their tally. Mumbai also failed to make it into the playoffs for a second successive edition.
While things might not have fallen in place for the five-time winners this time around, there were some individual performances for them to boast of and one such was from their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. After his excellent bowling display against the Capitals, Bumrah achieved a unique feat as an Indian bowler in the IPL.
Jasprit Bumrah creates a new record in IPL as an Indian bowler
Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless on a few occasions this season, but after taking a fifer against the Kolkata Knight Riders, the premier pacer maintained his consistency at the back end of the tournament. In fact, he rattled Delhi’s batting lineup with important wickets of Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, and Rovman Powell respectively to finish with figures of 3/25 from his quota of four overs.
Courtesy of this splendid performance, the speedster became the first Indian bowler to register 15 scalps to his name for the seventh consecutive IPL season. Bumrah is only the second bowler to achieve the unique feat after former Sri Lankan pace icon Lasith Malinga.
Meanwhile, Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Match for his remarkable bowling performances against the Delhi Capitals and finished his IPL 2022 campaign with 15 wickets from 14 games at an average of 25.53 and an economy rate of 7.18.
While the Mumbai Indians’ campaign finished early this year, they played a spoilsport to arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings and the Delhi Capital’s campaigns, denying both the sides a playoff berth by registering well-deserved wins over them. Apart from Bumrah, MI also found a new bowling sensation in Daniel Sams who finished with 13 wickets from 11 games.
