The BCCI had given the deadline of November 30 to all the franchises to announce the list of their retained and released players. Most of the retentions were quite obvious choices, whereas there were some names that shocked the cricketing fraternity. Talking about the Rajasthan Royals, the franchise retained three players for the upcoming seasons.

The order of retention is Sanju Samson (INR 14 Crores), Jos Buttler (INR 10 Crores), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (INR 4 Crores ). These players have been instrumental for the team and the franchise thus pinned their hopes on them to change the fortunes of the side. Though RR couldn’t qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2021, Samson had a splendid season on a personal note. He chipped in 484 runs from 14 matches.

England’s swashbuckling keeper-batter Jos Buttler on the other hand adds more value to any team he features for. Whereas the team also backed young Yashasvi Jaiswal with an eye on the future. However, what intrigued the cricketing world is that two of the superstars of world cricket Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer weren’t considered for retention.

However, RR’s Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara has come forward to shed some light on the same. In a video posted by the official Twitter account of the Rajasthan Royals, he said, “It’s extremely difficult. They are two of the best players in the world at the moment. Ben Stokes is the best all-rounder I have seen in a very long time. [He’s] an absolute match-winner and he has shown that for Rajasthan Royals. Absolutely brilliant as a team man, brilliant in a leadership role. He just brings his amazing energy to the field. We had to consider the number of retentions possible,” said Sangakkara in a video posted by RR.

Player availability, in terms of how much of the tournament that a player is available for. It’s the same with Jofra. We did everything to ascertain the nature of the injury, the recovery period. There hasn’t been a phenomenon like Jofra Archer in any form of cricket, especially T20 cricket. And I know the players themselves understand our reasoning, even though they may be disappointed. I am sure they are, as we are as a franchise. All these dynamics come into play.”
