Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) began their new era in the Indian Premier League (IPL) under new skipper Shreyas Iyer with a victory against the defending Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening match of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Knight Riders defeated the Men in Yellow by six wickets to kick-start their campaign with a win. In the re-match of last year’s final, former CSK skipper MS Dhoni grabbed the headlines as he notched up his first IPL fifty since 2019.

Speaking about how the opening game of the brand new edition of the IPL panned out, newly-appointed KKR captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to field first. Last season’s Orange Cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad bagged a duck as New Zealander Devon Conway managed just three runs on his IPL debut. Both were dismissed by the impressive quick Umesh Yadav as he bowled a brilliant spell of 2/20 in 4 overs. Robin Uthappa scored a quick-fire 28 runs off 21 balls with two fours and two sixes.

It was Dhoni who then mustered a half-century along with the new leader Ravindra Jadeja who scored 26 runs as CSK posted 131/5 in their 20 overs. In the run-chase, former Delhi Capitals player Ajinkya Rahane amassed 44 runs off just 34 deliveries with Nitish Rana, Shreyas Iyer, and Sam Billings all scoring over 20 runs. For CSK, Dwayne Bravo was the pick of the bowlers for his spell of 3/20 in four overs as he equaled Lasith Malinga’s record of 170 IPL wickets and is now joint-highest with him for most wickets in the tournament. Umesh Yadav for his two wickets first up was declared as the Player of the Match.
