The Sunrisers Hyderabad registered a seven-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 25 of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on April 15. SRH have registered their third consecutive victory courtesy of a clinical performance with both bat and ball while KKR have suffered back-to-back defeats.

Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bowl first. His decision was spot on as Kolkata lost wickets at regular intervals and their move to send mystery spinner Sunil Narine as a pinch-hitter also failed as he could only manage to score six runs. The two-time champions looked down and out at 70/4 at the halfway mark and that is when the middle-order sensation Nitish Rana took matters into his hands.

Rana took the attack to the SRH bowlers, especially the pace duo of Umran Malik and T Natarajan. He scored 54 runs from 36 deliveries at a strike rate of exactly 150. His innings included six fours and two sixes. After the southpaw’s dismissal, Caribbean power-hitter Andre Russell batted brilliantly at the death and remained unbeaten on a 25-ball 49 which propelled KKR to a competitive total of 175/8 from their 20 overs.

In reply, in-form opener Abhishek Sharma was castled by Pat Cummins early and SRH captain Kane Williamson did not last long either as he departed after scoring 17 runs. The Orange Army seemed to be in a spot of bother after being reduced to 39/2 inside the powerplay overs. That is when senior batter Rahul Tripathi and South African sensation Aiden Markram resurrected the innings for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The duo unsettled the Kolkata bowlers with their delightful strokes, thereby bringing the asking rate down. They added 94 runs for the third wicket before Tripathi was dismissed for an outstanding knock of 71 runs from 37 deliveries at a strike rate of 191.9. Markram then played with an aggressive approach and ensured that KKR did not get any chance of making a comeback.

The Proteas batter remained unbeaten on 68 runs off 36 balls as the 2016 winners crossed the line in the 18th over.
