Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowling came back to haunt them again as they failed to defend a target of 206 runs against the Punjab Kings in their maiden assignment in IPL 2022. Power-hitters Shahrukh Khan and Odean Smith remained unbeaten on 24 and 25 runs respectively, as RCB suffered a five-wicket defeat in the third match of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. RCB’s bowling again proved to be their Achilles heel as PBKS scripted their joint-highest successful run chase in IPL history.

Speaking about how the third match of the IPL 2022 panned out, new skipper Mayank Agarwal won the toss as PBKS elected to field first. RCB captain Faf du Plessis continued from where he left off in the last season as he slammed 88 runs off just 57 deliveries which included three fours and seven sixes. His opening partner Anuj Rawat scored 21 runs while former skipper Virat Kohli mustered 41 runs off 29 balls. Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik played a whirlwind innings of 32 runs off just 14 deliveries with three fours and as many maximums, helping RCB post a massive total of 205/2 in 20 overs.

In the run chase, all the top-three batters of PBKS fired as RCB bowlers endured a hard time in the powerplay overs. While captain Mayank scored 32 runs, both Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa notched up 43 runs apiece. England’s Liam Livingstone smashed two sixes as he amassed 19 runs off 10 balls. Odean Smith then joined Shahrukh Khan to slam 25 runs off eight balls with the help of three huge sixes. He was adjudged with the Player of the Match award as PBKS won the encounter with one over to spare.
