New franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) continued their great start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they defeated two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by eight runs in Match 35 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Skipper Hardik Pandya was the star again for GT as he returned to the side after missing the last game and struck his third consecutive half-century.
Speaking about how the match went by, Hardik won the toss and elected to bat as the Titans became the first side to do so. He replaced Vijay Shankar in the GT side with KKR making three changes. Sam Billings, Tim Southee, and Rinku Singh replaced Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, and Sheldon Jackson respectively. Wicketkeeper batter Wriddhiman Saha made a run-a-ball 25 as Shubman Gill managed to score only seven runs.
Hardik made full use of his good form as the captain who batted at no. three mustered 67 runs off 49 deliveries with four fours and two sixes. The standout player from the last match, David Miller amassed 27 runs off 20 deliveries as GT reached a total of 156/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Andre Russell bowled only one over, the 20th over of the innings and he accounted four scalps. He became the first-ever pacer to pick fours wickets in an over in the IPL.
Chasing 157 to win, KKR opened the innings with a new batting pair of Billings and Sunil Narine. Both couldn’t do much as they were dismissed for single-digit scores by pacer Mohammed Shami. Skipper Shreyas Iyer scored 12 runs while Nitish Rana’s horror run in the tournament continued. He got out for just two runs and has now mustered only 143 runs in eight innings this season. Rinku scored 35 runs with Venkatesh Iyer’s bad season also stretched as the left-handed batter could only manage 17 runs.
Andre Russell kept KKR in the hunt for the chase with the Caribbean power-hitter smashing six maximums. But he got dismissed for 48 runs off the bowling of his countryman Alzarri Joseph and it was curtains for the Knight Riders. GT jumped to the top with 12 points in the table, while KKR with a fourth successive loss occupy the seventh position with just six points. Rashid Khan, who reached the milestone of 100 IPL wickets took 2/22 and was adjudged with the Player of the Match award.
