Gujarat Titans pulled off a stunning victory against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 40 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match went down right into the wire and a last-over thriller saw the Hardik Pandya-led side finishing on the winning side. With the victory, Gujarat Titans have regained their position at the top of the points table with seven wins in eight games and are inching closer to the qualification.
Gujarat Titans won the toss and they had no hesitations in bowling first. Kane Williamson and Rahul Tripathi were removed early by Mohammed Shami, and the onus was on Abhishek Sharma (65) and Aiden Markram (56) to steady the ship. The duo added 96 for the third wicket and provided the impetus for an excellent finish towards the end. Shashank Singh’s 6-ball-25 meant that the Sunrisers posted a huge total of 195/6 on the board in their 20 overs.
Saha plays a gritty inning to set up an excellent start for GT
In reply, the Gujarat Titans had the perfect start with both openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha going after the bowling, and Saha in particular was quite aggressive from the outset. Gill and Hardik Pandya were dismissed soon by Umran Malik with some jaw-dropping deliveries and the speedster looked a lot threatening in the middle overs. However, Saha kept taking on the spinners from one end and it needed an outstanding yorker from Malik to get rid of Saha for a well-made 38-ball 68.
Malik then picked David Miller and Abhinav Manohar in consecutive deliveries with sheer pace and brought up his maiden five-wicket haul in IPL. Despite the brilliant spell from Malik, Rahul Tewatia (40*) and Rashid Khan (31*) kept their side in the hunt with some lusty blows in the end and it came down to 22 needed off the last over from Marco Jansen. The former SRH spinner Rashid hit two sixes off the last two deliveries to win the game for his side on the last ball.
Losing skipper, Kane Williamson said:
It was a fantastic game of cricket that ebbed and flowed throughout the 40 overs, it’s a game of very fine margins. Could have gone either ways, but a great learning for us. Another strong performance at the top of the table though. It was a fantastic finish by Shashank Singh, he played beautifully. Credit to Gujarat as they played outstandingly well, we’ll take positives out of this game. He (Malik) has been bowling beautifully, an outstanding performance by him. If you are not on the money, the ball can fly anywhere. He (Rashid) has done it already in this tournament, and he has done it again. There’s a lot of learning for us, but with two strong sides, such things happen. He (Jansen) will bounce back nicely, there have been a number of games like these. Sometimes you are blown away by the better side, credit to them (Gujarat) as they played outstandingly well.
Winning skipper, Hardik Pandya said:
I keep joking in the dressing room that God is telling us ‘You guys are good, I’ll help you’. It’s happening so often that I fear we may run out of luck in the knockout games. We keep a very chilled atmosphere and everyone is stepping up. We’re ensuring that the players are backed well. (On his bowling fitness) It’s just a conscious decision to manage my bowling, plan is to bowl whenever the team needs me. It’s a long tournament and I don’t want to get too excited early. We’re quite practical, we’ve spoken about winning these situations and there is a lot of self-belief in the camp. It’s important to keep the calm in the dugout, lot of credit goes to the support staff for how they’ve been handling the players
Player of the Match, Umran Malik
I always bowl fast but I’ve been trying to bowl better lines and lengths. Plan was to rotate between my plans. Idea was to attack the stumps and it’s worked well for me. 155 (kph), hopefully, it happens, but the main goal is to bowl well and pick wickets for my team.
