The Delhi Capitals got the better of the Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in Match 41 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 28. The win has helped Delhi in reviving their campaign as they now move up to the sixth spot in the points table with four wins from eight matches at a net run rate of +0.695.
DC skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Delhi bowlers made a statement with the ball in hand right from the beginning as Kolkata’s innings could never take off. Only Nitish Rana and Shreyas Iyer took up the challenge and went on to play impactful knocks. Rana scored a 34-ball 57 while Iyer scored 42 runs from 37 deliveries. Kuldeep Yadav’s figures of 4/14 in three overs restricted Kolkata to 146/9.
Rovman Powell roars back to form with a match-winning knock
In reply, the Capitals lost the opener, Prithvi Shaw, for a golden duck and Mitchell Marsh early before David Warner took the charge scoring 42 runs from 26 balls before being deceived by Umesh Yadav’s bouncer. Quick wickets then derailed DCs’s chase before Axar Patel made his presence felt scoring a quickfire 17-ball 24 before his unfortunate run-out put Delhi in a spot of bother.
Nonetheless, West Indies sensation Rovman Powell rose to the occasion and finished the job for the Delhi Capitals with an over to spare. He remained unbeaten on 33 runs from 16 deliveries.
Losing skipper, Shreyas Iyer said:
We started off really slowly and lost a couple of early wickets. It was holding up a bit (the wicket), but we didn’t get a good score on the board. No real excuses, we have to go back and assess where things are going wrong. A lot of chopping and changing is happening (at the top of the order), it’s been difficult to set up the right combination, with all injuries not helping as well. We need to stick together, play some fearless cricket, not be conservative with the bat. Five more matches remaining, we need to play well, show belief and give something back to the team and the management, forget about the past, start fresh and back your instinct (on what KKR needs to do now). You need to sit back and think where it’s going wrong, can’t be overconfident, give your best, if we still lose, then it’s fine. Umesh started with a wicket, but gave away 11 runs in the over, that’s where I thought the momentum turned. But he has given us a lot of good moments this season and has been very very impressive as well.
Winning skipper, Rishabh Pant said:
We were thinking (of the wobble) because we lost too many wickets in the middle but at the same time we thought if we take the game deep, we can win it. It is good to have Marsh back. We haven’t thought (about this as the best XI) as hundred percent. Khaleel got injured and that was a forced change, once he is back then we will have our best XI. I was just watching the ball till the end (referring to his low catch). I have been keeping a lot in the nets and that was my best catch throughout the season. We see him (Powell) as a finisher but like today when we lost too many wickets, he has to come up and do the job. We are not thinking about the points table and take one game at a time. We have to be more clear with our plans and that is something we can improve. I thought we would give him (Kuldeep) his final over from the other end but then the ball kept getting wet and I also wanted to change the pace, that’s why I brought the fast bowlers in but it didn’t work.”
Player of the Match, Kuldeep Yadav said:
I might have become a better bowler, but I am mentally stronger than before. When you fail in life you pick what you can improve on and that is something I had to improve. I don’t get scared of failing now. I liked Russell’s wicket as I set him up, it was my plan and when there were a couple of dots I knew he would step out. This is the best IPL season for me. I am enjoying my bowling. I don’t think what the batter will do and what if I get hit. My focus has been to bowl the right line and lengths. I felt there was bat but thought the ball had touched the ground but when Rishabh went up then I was positive, it was an important wicket as Shreyas was batting well. There has never been competition with him (Chahal). He’s like my big brother and has always backed me. He kept motivating me when I was injured and I hope he wins the Purple Cap.
