IPL 2022, Match 41 PBKS vs LSG, Stats Review: Kagiso Rabada's feat, Arshdeep Singh’s record and other stats

In the 42nd match of this IPL season, Lucknow Super Giants defeated Punjab Kings by 20 runs by successfully defending a target of 154, at the MCA International Stadium in Pune. Despite losing their star batter KL Rahul early, an 85-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda was the key to guiding Lucknow to a match-winning score. Mohsin Khan, Dushmantha Chameera, and Krunal Pandya were brilliant to ensure that this total got defended, as they took regular wickets as well as controlled the run flow.

Prior to this match, Quinton de Kock had scored 73 runs against Kagiso Rabada’s bowling at a strike rate of 153, and without being dismissed. PBKS, who were probably wary of this fact, sent Arshdeep Singh and Sandeep Sharma to open with Rabada to bowl the next over. Rabada at his new position took the vital wicket of KL Rahul at a score of just six. However, his struggles against De Kock continued as the southpaw smashed his countryman for two successive sixes.

Quinton de Kock shared an 85-run stand with Deepak Hooda to steady the ship. The partnership was broken with a rare incident in DRS era, with Quinton de Kock deciding to walk despite not being given out by the umpires. This incident marked the turning point in Lucknow’s innings, as they suffered a collapse from 98/1 to 111/6 in less than three overs. Tiny cameos at the rear end from Jason Holder, Dushmantha Chameera, and Mohsin Khan took the team to 153/6. Rabada finished with a four-fer despite being hit by De Kock earlier.

Though the total was a few runs short of par, Lucknow Super Giants did what they needed to do perfectly – taking wickets at regular intervals. Mohsin Khan began the target defence with a brilliant maiden over. Just when Mayank Agarwal began breaking the shackles, KL Rahul took a superb catch as Dushmantha Chameera produced the timely wicket. Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa were soon dismissed for single-digit scores.

Liam Livingstone, who came in to bat at five, started off aggressively, hitting two back-to-back sixes off Ravi Bishnoi. But LSG came back strongly in the game without conceding any boundary in the next three overs and taking two wickets. After another expensive over from Ravi Bishnoi, it was Dushmantha Chameera who sealed the match with Jonny Bairstow’s wicket.

6.25 – Arshdeep Singh’s economy rate in the death overs in 2022, the lowest among all pacers (min: 30 balls). He conceded just three fours while bowling 48 balls during this phase.

6 – KL Rahul’s first match against Punjab Kings since 2016 wasn’t a memorable one, as he got dismissed for six runs in eleven balls. Rahul has never reached a fifty against PBKS, in six innings.

11 – Runs conceded by Krunal Pandya in his full quota of four overs, which is the joint second-lowest this season, tied with Harshal Patel against KKR. The lowest is 10 runs by Axar Patel against PBKS.

17 – Runs conceded by Dushmantha Chameera in his full quota of four overs. This is the second-lowest runs conceded by an overseas player bowling all four overs in an innings this season. The lowest is also by Dushmantha Chameera himself against MI.

71 – Innings taken by Deepak Hooda to complete 1000 runs in the IPL, which is the second slowest of all players. The only player who reached the milestone slower than him is Axar Patel, in 81 innings.

89 – Krunal Pandya bowled his first maiden over in the IPL, in his 89th innings. Kieron Pollard is the only cricketer who has bowled in more innings (104) in the IPL, without any maiden over.
