Mumbai Indians (MI) finally ended their wait for a victory this campaign as they defeated the high-flying Rajasthan Royals (RR) side by five wickets in Match 44 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Suryakumar Yadav was the star for MI in their run-chase of 159 as he scored 51 runs off just 39 deliveries with five fours and two sixes. With the ball, Riley Meredith was the pick of the bowlers for the five-time champions with the Australian bowling a spell of 2/24 in four overs.

Speaking about how the encounter panned out, skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. They made two changes with Tim David and Kumar Kartikeya coming into the team for Dewald Brevis and Jaydev Unadkat respectively. RR went into the game with the same playing XI from the last match. Jos Buttler continued his love affair with MI as the England international, who is in red-hot form this season, smashed 67 runs off 52 deliveries with five fours and four maximums.

Devdutt Padikkal’s poor form extended as he scored just 15 runs. Captain Sanju Samson got dismissed for 16 runs while big-hitter Shimron Hetmyer struggled for his unbeaten innings of six runs off 14 balls. R Ashwin’s nine-ball 21 runs cameo took RR to a total of 158/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing 159 for their first victory of the season, skipper Rohit got out for just two runs on his 35th birthday. The leader of the side, Rohit has now gone 17 IPL innings without a fifty to his name. Ishan Kishan looked like getting back into some form as the left-handed wicketkeeper batter scored 26 off 18 deliveries which included four fours and a six. But it was Suryakumar Yadav who slammed a fifty and made sure that MI was on course for a win.

Tilak Varma amassed 35 runs while power-hitter Tim David remained not out on 20 off nine deliveries to seal the deal for MI. RR with 12 points remain in the second spot while MI finally opened their account but are still at rock bottom in the table. For his match-winning half-century that helped his side in winning their first match of the campaign, Suryakumar Yadav grabbed the Player-of-the-Match award.
