MS Dhoni’s second innings as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper began in style as the Men in Yellow defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 13 runs in Match 46 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune thanks to a record opening stand of 182 runs between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. The duo recorded the highest partnership for any wicket for CSK beating the previous best of 181* between Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson against Punjab Kings in 2020. Gaikwad got dismissed for 99 runs while the Kiwi Devon Conway made an unbeaten 85 runs off 55 deliveries with eight fours and four sixes. CSK posted a mammoth total of 202/2 in 20 overs, eventually winning their third match of the season.
Talking about how the Southern Derby panned out, Kane Williamson won the toss, and SRH elected to field first. They played with the same team from the last match while CSK made two changes. Conway and Simarjeet Singh came into the side for Dwayne Bravo and Shivam Dube respectively.
Gaikwad scored his second half-century of this campaign, both of which have now come at the same venue as he scored 99 runs off 57 deliveries with six fours and as many maximums. He suffered a heartbreak as the right-handed batter missed out on his second IPL century by just one run. T Natarajan took both the wickets for SRH as the Orange Army was set a daunting target.
Chasing 203 to win, openers Abhishek Sharma and skipper Williamson amassed 39 and 47 runs respectively. Rahul Tripathi bagged a golden duck while the man-in-form Aiden Markram managed only 17 runs. Nicholas Pooran remained unbeaten for 64 runs off 33 deliveries which included three fours and six sixes.
The Caribbean power-hitter tried hard but it was too little too late for SRH to achieve the huge target. After winning five matches on the bounce, Williamson’s side has now suffered two back-to-back defeats and they are currently at the fourth position with ten points. CSK, after winning their third match, occupy the ninth spot with six points. For his fantastic innings of 99, Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the Player of the Match.
