Royal Challengers Bangalore finally tasted success after losing three consecutive matches as Faf du Plessis led his side to a comprehensive victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 49 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Mahipal Lomror and Dinesh Karthik helped RCB reach 173/8 in 20 overs while Harshal Patel took three wickets for 35 runs in his four-over spell to script the sixth victory for his side. With seven losses in ten games, CSK’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs are all but over.
Speaking about how the Southern derby went by, MS Dhoni won the toss and CSK elected to field first as they made just one change, with Moeen Ali replacing Mitchell Santner. RCB went into the match with the same playing XI from their last game. Virat Kohli played yet another slow innings as he scored 30 runs off 33 deliveries, while skipper Du Plessis made 38 runs. Glenn Maxwell could not do much as he was run out for three.
Lomror, who came in to bat at number four, amassed 42 runs off 27 deliveries with three fours and two maximums while Dinesh Karthik did what Dinesh Karthik has been doing this season as he remained unbeaten on 26 runs off 17 balls, which included a four and two sixes. Maheesh Theekshana was the pick of the bowlers for CSK as he snared three scalps for 27 runs.
Chasing 174, Ruturaj Gaikwad mustered 28 runs off 23 deliveries while Kiwi Devon Conway looked in solid touch yet again as he slammed his second consecutive half-century. The left-handed batter scored 56 runs off 37 balls with Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu getting dismissed for one and ten runs respectively.
Moeen Ali kept going for CSK as he scored 34 runs before getting out to Harshal. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja’s horror run continued as he made just three runs. Dhoni also couldn’t do much as he was dismissed for two. Maxwell took two wickets while Josh Hazlewood bowled a terrific spell of 1/19. RCB now occupy the fourth spot with 12 points while CSK are almost eliminated. For his three-wicket haul, Harshal Patel won the Player of the Match award.
