The Rajasthan Royals got back to winning ways by getting the better of northern rivals Punjab Kings by six wickets in Match 52 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 7. The victory has thus helped Rajasthan in jumping to the third position in the points table. They have now won seven out of 11 games and have 14 points to their tally.

Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal won the toss and elected to bat first. Jonny Bairstow, who was promoted up the order with Shikhar Dhawan, looked in splendid touch and the duo added 47 runs for the opening stand. Bairstow held on from one hand even when the top-order could not show much resistance despite captain Agarwal batting in the middle-order. The Englishman’s 56 runs from 40 deliveries and an unbeaten 18-ball 38 from Jitesh Sharma propelled Punjab to 189/5.

Shimron Hetmyer does wonders for RR at the end

In reply, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler ensured a good start for the Royals with a 46-run stand. While Buttler was dismissed for 30, the youngster anchored the Rajasthan chase and registered a valuable half-century as he went on to score 68 runs off 41 balls before losing his wicket.

Devdutt Padikkal also contributed with an important 31 but more importantly, it was the Caribbean power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer’s unbeaten 16-ball 31 that proved to be the game-changer as the inaugural edition’s winners got past the finish line with two balls to spare.

Losing skipper, Mayank Agarwal said:

I thought we got a very good score. In the middle overs we didn’t stick to our bowling plans. They kept coming hard at us and kept scoring boundaries. Going through and through for 20 overs, they had the momentum on their side. Arshdeep has been nothing short of brilliant. He puts his hand up when the team needs it. He has been a leader in the team and it has been fantastic for us. We have to make the best use of our resources. Jonny came out and batted exceptionally.

Winning skipper, Sanju Samson said:

We all knew that he (Yashasvi Jaiswal) was due for a good innings. He spends quality time training and practicing, spending a lot of hours in the nets. Very happy for him. Wanted to chase some games and win. Happy to chase, it was a really good wicket and really great intent shown by almost every batsman. There is no set strategy that fast bowlers have to bowl at the death, I feel anyone having a great temperament and having great experience can do the job for the team. He (Yuzvendra Chahal) said that he’s even ready to bowl the 20th over, he’s confident and he’s doing well for the team. I wanted to go out there (at three) and express myself and play a few shots, that’s what I did. Enjoyed it – short and sweet. We need to keep on coming back to the basics which is to take one game at a time and look at the controllables. We’ll keep on giving importance to each and every game and then doing our best in every game. Let’s see where we end up at the end of the league stages.

Player of the Match, Yashasvi Jaiswal said:

To be honest, I didn’t know I’ll be the Man of the Match. It’s an amazing feeling whenever I go and bat, with all my pride I go and bat. (Favourite shot) I think the one I hit Rahul Chahar over the covers. I just tried to keep it simple – good cricketing shots. I want to dedicate this innings to Zubin sir (Zubin Bharucha). He has helped me a lot during all the times, whenever I was sitting with him, when I was down. He has been pushing me always. It’s been a pleasure to perform like this. He has motivated me a lot, pushing me everyday like ‘you can do it, you’ll do it, just keep working hard.’ I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing, I’ll try my best.
