The Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders squared off in the 53rd match of the IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. KKR had managed to break their losing streak in their previous contest, whereas LSG had won three games in a row and were looking to continue the streak, which they did as they defeated KKR by whopping 75 runs.

The contest started with LSG skipper KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock opening the innings for their side after being put to bat first. But it was a day not to be remembered for the skipper as he was dismissed for a diamond duck, being run out in the first over, due to confusion in the middle and walked back scoring no runs. But De Kock compensated with his power-hitting skills and punished the KKR bowlers.

De Kock and Deepak Hooda put up a brilliant partnership after losing the early wicket as the former led his way with the bat. It was mystery bowler Sunil Narine who gave KKR the crucial breakthrough by scalping De Kock (50 off 29). Then came Andre Russell, who picked two wickets in two overs thereby taking down the in-form Hooda (41 off 27) and Krunal Pandya (25 off 27). Just when it seemed like LSG would be restricted to a low total, Marcus Stoinis (28 off 14) and Jason Holder (13 off 4) wreaked havoc with their quick cameos as LSG put up 176/7.

LSG moves to the top of the points table with a strong NRR

LSG bowlers were on a roll from the word go as they managed to reduce KKR to a low score at the end of the powerplay, thereby dishing out the top-order completely. While Baba Indrajith was gone for a six-ball duck, Shreyas Iyer (6 off 9) and Aaron Finch (14 off 14) had to walk back to the pavilion courtesy to Dushmantha Chameera and Jason Holder.

Power-hitters Nitish Rana (2 off 11) and Rinku Singh (6 off 10), who led the team to a victory in their last game, also failed to impress this time. Russell put up a great performance as he fired with the bat to keep KKR’s winning hopes alive, but he couldn’t survive Avesh Khan’s pace and walked off scoring a magnificent 19-ball 45. Narine (22 off 12) tried his best, but couldn’t stand against his West Indies teammate Holder. LSG bowlers spared no one and cleaned up the KKR lineup for 101 runs, thereby winning the game by 75 runs.
