In their second match of the season, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) locked horns at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. KKR came into the game after defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the inaugural match of the season and RCB had faced a defeat against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their first game of IPL 2022.

The game started with RCB winning the toss and electing to bowl first. The decision proved to work in RCB’s favour as they successfully restricted KKR to 128, bowling them out in 18.5 overs. Wanindu Hasaranga recorded the bowling figures of 4/20 in four overs, which included 15 dot balls. Akash Deep added three wickets to his tally, but conceded 45 runs in the 3.5 overs that he bowled.

As for KKR’s batting unit, Andre Russell was the top scorer for his side with a score of 25 runs with the bat. KKR failed to reach a defendable score and ended their innings before the completion of 20 overs. When Russell hit the bowlers for some quick sixes, it gave KKR some hope of getting a good total.

RCB defeat KKR by three wickets

KKR bowlers left no pages unturned to unsettle the RCB batters. RCB’s top order batters – Anuj Rawat, 0(2), Faf du Plessis, 5(4), and Virat Kohli, 12(7), were dismissed in the powerplay, and after six overs the team stood at 36/3, courtesy of Umesh Yadav who added two wickets to his tally.

Middle-order batters David Willey and Sherfane Rutherford stabilized the innings before the former was dismissed by Sunil Narine. Three maximums by Shahbaz Ahmed helped RCB cut the run rate short, but the batters were seen struggling to cover up and get to the mark.

When the bowling duties were handed over to Venkatesh Iyer, Harshal Patel hit him for two fours, and the game came sliding into RCB’s bag. When RCB required seven runs off the last over, a six and a four by Dinesh Karthik off Andre Russell’s first two deliveries helped RCB seal the deal and win the game by three wickets.
