Spinner Wanindu Hasaranga was the star for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as he spun his web to take figures of 4/20 in a four-over spell to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to just 128, subsequently winning the encounter for his franchise. Akash Deep and Harshal Patel took three and two wickets, respectively, as RCB defeated KKR by three wickets in Match 6 of IPL 2022 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
Earlier, skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and he elected to bowl first. KKR openers Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer amassed just nine and ten runs, respectively, as apart from Andre Russell, no other KKR batter crossed the 20-run mark. Hasaranga and Akash Deep were the chief destroyers with Harshal Patel also bowling two consecutive maidens and 19 dot balls in his four-over spell. Russell scored 25 runs off 18 deliveries with three maximums to flex his muscles but couldn’t help his side in achieving a big total on the board.
Chasing just 129 runs to win, Umesh Yadav replicated his performance from the last match as he took the wickets of Anuj Rawat and Virat Kohli in another powerplay burst. West Indies’ Sherfane Rutherford fought hard for his 28 runs off 40 balls with Shahbaz Ahmed playing a cameo of 27 runs off 20 deliveries, which included three sixes.
Tim Southee achieved his best figures of 3/20 in the IPL as Dinesh Karthik made sure he was there till the end to score an unbeaten 14 runs with a four and a six to finish off the low-scoring match with four balls to spare in RCB’s favour. Wanindu Hasaranga was declared the Player of the Match for his match-winning spell.
