The 67th match of the IPL 2022 saw the Royals Challengers Bangalore squaring off against the Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. GT had already qualified for the playoffs, and RCB was looking to move on the same path, aiming for a victory in their final league fixture. Their hard work paid off, thanks to a stupendous comeback by Virat Kohli, as RCB won the match by eight wickets.
The Gujarat Titans skipper and his deputy provided the team a desired closing touch. With the top-order batters falling within the first nine overs, Hardik Pandya was the anchor that held this innings together. To start with, Shubman Gill (1 off 4) was dismissed early as he could not withstand Glenn Maxwell’s blinder, whereas Matthew Wade (16 off 13) was the unlucky recipient of an ill-fated dismissal. Soon, the in-form Wriddhiman Saha (31 off 22) walked back to the pavillion facing an unanticipated run-out.
Skipper Pandya (62* off 47) provided some strength to the innings with his fine partnership with David Miller (34 off 25). Faf du Plessis deployed seven bowlers tonight, but Harshal Patel’s injury was clearly a significant setback. Wanindu Hasaranga controlled the middle overs with his customary brilliance, while Maxwell’s four overs were also economical. Josh Hazlewood produced a critical breakthrough early on but his spell came at a high price tonight, allowing GT to earn the huge climax they needed. The Titans were saved by Rashid Khan’s cameo after Hardik Pandya’s half-century looked underwhelming. Halfway into the game, the Titans had the upper hand, courtesy of Rashid’s six-ball 19* cameo.
Kohli’s start and Maxwell’s finishing touch lead RCB to a massive victory
The RCB openers started the chase with a bang, taking on every GT bowler. Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli brought up a 50-run stand in the powerplay and extended it to a 115-run stand with Kohli doing the fireworks. It was surely amazing, and a much-needed comeback for Kohli. He took charge of the game from the word go and was at his best.
GT got a breakthrough late in the 15th over of the game, when Rashid Khan scalped the RCB skipper. Du Plessis (44 off 38) was nearing his half-century but fell short of a few runs. Maxwell, who joined Kohli in the top order, went bonkers as soon as he entered the game. Maxwell (40* off 18) outclassed Pandya and his men as RCB’s chase was cut short significantly. Rashid then went on to put brakes on Kohli’s run as the former skipper walked back scoring a 54-ball 73 runs.
Except for Rashid, all other bowlers went wicketless as RCB successfully chased down the target. Now that they’ve ended their campaign on a high note and taken the fourth place in the points table, they would hope for Mumbai to defeat Delhi in order to qualify for the playoffs.
