One of the most popular franchises in the tournament was bought by renowned businessman Vijay Mallya in 2008. At that time, he was quite a success in his two key businesses, alcoholic beverages company United Spirits and Kingfisher Airlines.

Unfortunately, Vijay Mallya failed to pay the debt, which he used to expand Kingfisher Airlines, and thereby was involved in a major scam. Ahead of IPL 2016, Vijay Mallya resigned from the post of chairman of United Spirits, with the parent company Diageo India paying him INR 550 crores.

At present, RCB is owned by United Spirits Limited, which has the largest market share in terms of alcoholic beverages. The senior executive, Prathmesh Mishra is the chairman of Royal Challengers Bangalore currently.

9. <strong>Delhi Capitals (DC) &#8211; JSW &amp; GMR Group</strong>

In 2008, the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/kya-mazak-chal-raha-hai-twitter-disappointed-with-chetan-sakariya-not-playing-for-delhi-capitals/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Delhi Capitals</strong> </a>(formerly Delhi Daredevils) was bought by the multinational conglomerate, GMR Group, which manages Infrastructure, Energy, Airports businesses in the country. Until 2017, the GMR Group was the sole owner of the franchise.

In 2019, JSW Steel, which is one of the giants in the fields of steel, energy, minerals formed a 50:50 joint partnership with GMR Group. The JSW Group have also been the principal sponsor for Delhi Capitals for the last few years. The managing director Parth Jindal has been quite active in supporting the teams at the stadium.

Since 2019, when JSW became the co-owner of Delhi Capitals, they have reached the playoffs each season until 2021, and certainly seem to be the lucky charm for the team.

8. <strong>Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) &#8211; SUN TV Group </strong>

In the inaugural edition, the Deccan Chargers were the franchise based out of Hyderabad and were owned by Deccan Chronicle. They featured in the IPL from 2008 to 2012, while also lifting the title in 2009. Unfortunately, the team was banned by the BCCI in 2012, after they were found to breach their contract terms.

The majority owner (65%) of the Rajasthan Royals franchise is Manoj Badale, who owns Emerging Media Pvt. Ltd and which is a market leader in the field of advertising. He is also a co-founder of 15 different businesses, with areas related to technology and financial services.

The other minority owners of the team are Lachlan Murdoch (13%) and RedBird Capital Partners (15%). The businessman Lachlan Murdoch is a well-known personality in the field of Mass Media in the UK, while RedBird Capital Partners is a private investment firm based in New York.

In 2009, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra also bought a 11.7% stake in Rajasthan Royals and became the co-owners. But, they sold their entire stake in 2015 after Raj Kundra was convicted of illegal betting on IPL matches by the Supreme Court of India.

The new entrant to the Indian Premier League, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/twitter-reactions-gujarat-titans-trump-fellow-debutants-lucknow-super-giants-in-a-last-over-thriller/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Gujarat Titans</strong> </a>, was bought by CVC Capital Partners, after winning the bid by shelling an amount of INR 5,625 crores. CVC Capital Partners is a Luxembourg=based private equity and investment advisory firm, having a presence with 24 offices around America, Europe, and Asia.

CVC Capital has been a prominent investor in the sports industry over the years. They hold around a 11% share in one of the popular European football tournaments, La Liga. In the past, they made a huge chunk of money by selling their Formula 1 stake.

In the past year, they made investments in the games like Rugby and Volleyball. They forayed into cricket for the first time ever, due to the rising stature of the Indian Premier League.

4. <strong>Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) &#8211; RP Sanjeev Goenka Group </strong>

The second team to make their debut in the Indian Premier League in this edition is Lucknow Super Giants. They secured the Lucknow franchise after a winning bid of INR 7090 Crores. They have a variety of businesses in the areas of power and energy, carbon black manufacturing, FMCG, media, and entertainment, and are owned by Sanjeev Goenka.

The RPSG Group has an asset base of US $7 billion and a revenue of US $4 billion and is a supplier of power to Kolkata, Noida, Bikaner, and Kota through its flagship company, CESC. It is a subsidiary company of Spencer&#8217;s Retail, Firstsource, and Saregama.

The company was also the owner of Rising Pune Supergiant, which featured in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Indian Premier League.

3. <strong>Mumbai Indians (MI) &#8211; Mukesh Ambani</strong>

The team with the highest winning percentage in the tournament&#8217;s history was bought by the leading cement manufacturing company, India Cements, in 2008.  The managing director of India Cements, N Srinivasan, is also a former chairman of the ICC and a former president of the BCCI.

In 2015, Lodha Committee suspended CSK for two years due to match-fixing. The key man behind the scandal was the son-in-law of N Srinivasan, Gurunath Meiyappan. After being found guilty, both Srinivasan and Gurunath Meiyappan were banned from the Indian Premier League.

Then the ownership of Chennai Super Kings was transferred to Chennai Super Kings Ltd, which is a subsidiary of India Cements and has a total of eight directors. The CSK team possesses a net worth of around INR 7600 crores.

<p>One of the most popular franchises in the tournament was bought by renowned businessman Vijay Mallya in 2008. At that time, he was quite a success in his two key businesses, alcoholic beverages company United Spirits and Kingfisher Airlines.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, Vijay Mallya failed to pay the debt, which he used to expand Kingfisher Airlines, and thereby was involved in a major scam. Ahead of IPL 2016, Vijay Mallya resigned from the post of chairman of United Spirits, with the parent company Diageo India paying him INR 550 crores.</p>

<div>The two Bollywood celebrities, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/shah-rukh-khans-children-aryan-and-suhana-spotted-in-the-ipl-mega-auction-briefing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Shah Rukh Khan</strong></a> and Juhi Chawla, came together in 2008, to co-own a Kolkata-based franchise, and named it Kolkata Knight Riders. In this joint partnership, Red Chillies Entertainment owns a 55% share, while the Mehta Group has a 45% share in the franchise.</div>

<div>Red Chillies Entertainment is a visual effects, production, and distribution company founded by Shah Rukh Khan in 2003. The revenue of the company is estimated to be INR 4000 crores annually. The Mehta group is owned by the husband of Juhi Chawla, Jay Mehta and is involved in businesses like sugar, cement, and building materials.</div>

<div>In 2015, the owners decided to buy a stake in one of the teams of the Caribbean Premier League and named it Trinbago Knight Riders. They are also said to be in advanced talks to buy a team in the proposed UAE T20 League.</div>
