The Punjab Kings go into the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) with a new captain in Mayank Agarwal, on whom they would be pinning all their hopes for a much-improved show compared to their previous few seasons. The Kings have been mediocre at the tournament in several seasons and would want to turn around their fortunes come the IPL 2022.

The Punjab Kings are one of the only three teams to have played all 15 seasons of the tournament without winning a title. They have over the years looked good in phases but faltered when it has mattered the most. The 2014 season proved to be their best outing so far in the league, with them finishing as runners-up.

However, there were some well-thought strategies and tactics visible at the PBKS’ auction table in last month’s mega auction. The franchise appeared to be much more patient and better prepared as compared to the previous auctions. They made some really smart buys and were decent with their retentions in Agarwal and the young Arshdeep Singh.

In Shikhar Dhawan, the Kings have managed to secure a highly experienced opening batter who has been an Indian stalwart. They further have the likes of Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow who bring in their explosive batsmanship to the team.

Their bowling attack looks potent with South African pacer and proven performer, Kagiso Rabada, leading their pace attack. In the young Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Chahar and Prabhsimran Singh, the team from Punjab possesses plenty of raw talent and skills.

However, the Kings with all the ammunition that they have had in the past seasons, have looked to choke under pressure. There have been games in which the team has lost from winning positions. Such defeats have affected their fortunes in several seasons now and it is something the team’s management would want to focus upon when they start their IPL 2022 campaign against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 27th at the DY Patil Stadium.
