It has been a breakthrough year for the Caribbean batter, Rovman Powell. After returning as the second-highest run-scorer in the January T20I series against England with 147 runs in three innings, he was snapped up by Delhi Capitals (DC) for the Indian Premier League 2022. In his last outing for DC, the Jamaica-born cricketer registered his top score of 67* off 35 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), comprising six sixes, which also included a 102-m six off Umran Malik.
In the latest interaction, Powell seemed confident about breaking Liam Livingstone’s record (117m) and is aiming for a 130-m six. He thinks the batter needs to have a stable presence in the crease and should not overhit the ball. Then, the 28-year-old thinks that he has got a strong core, and can muscle it out on a good batting surface, by swinging the ball across the line. It is known to all that the biggest six (125m) in the IPL history has been hit by Albie Morkel in 2008.
“I think I can get there, I even said yesterday to Mandeep that I am going to hit the ball close to 130m. Let’s see how it goes!,” Powell told IPLT20.com.
“The key is to not try and overhit the ball. Once you get into good positions, once you get a good base, it’s just about the core. My core is strong and then, on good wickets, I can swing through the line, and hit the ball across the line. That’s basically what I do. I give myself a chance and use the depth of the crease so that I can get under the balls when they try to bowl full,” Powell added.
DC hands SRH their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2022
After being invited to bat first, DC had an average start in the powerplay overs but accelerated as the fielding restrictions eased. The unbeaten partnership of 122 runs from David Warner and Powell propelled the team to post a score of 207 on the board, with the former scoring 92* off 58 balls.
In response, the SRH top-order crumbled, but it was again the duo of Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram, who hit the ball quite well, after getting their eyes in. However, after Markram perished for 42 off 25, Pooran (62 off 34) tried hard in the end, but could not secure a victory for the team as they fell short by 21 runs.
