IPL Stats: Jos Buttler becomes sixth batter to score multiple centuries in a season
Jos Buttler showed an excellent display of batting and scored 103 against KKR.
England batter Jos Buttler on April 18 (Monday) strengthened his position in the Orange Cap (Most Runs) race as he scored his second century of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) edition in the group-stage match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Buttler has been in excellent touch this edition, having already scored two centuries and two fifties in six games for Rajasthan Royals (RR).
The right-handed batter produced an excellent display of batting and kept the Royals’ score moving throughout the innings. He reached the three-figure mark with a six off Australian pacer Pat Cummins in the 17th over. His 61-ball 103 included nine fours and five maximums. He got out after top-edging it to Varun Chakaravarthy. Before getting dismissed, Buttler became the second overseas player, after veteran Shane Watson, to score a hundred at the Brabourne Stadium.
Meanwhile, the opener initially put up a 97-run opening partnership with Devdutt Padikkal (24 off 18 balls). Buttler then teamed up with skipper Sanju Samson to add 67 runs for the second wicket, taking the Royals past the 150 mark in the 15th over.
Jos Buttler joins the elite list
The 31-year-old is now the sixth batter to score at least two hundreds in a single IPL season. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) senior batter Virat Kohli heads the list with four centuries in the 2016 edition. The 33-year-old was the top run-scorer of the tournament, where he smashed 973 runs from 16 matches, which included four centuries and seven half-centuries.
‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle, Hashim Amla, Shane Watson, and Shikhar Dhawan are the other four batters to have scored multiple IPL tons in a season. All have got two centuries each, with the Indian opener Dhawan being the latest one to achieve the milestone. Dhawan had smashed two hundreds in IPL 2020 while Australian batter Shane Watson and Hashim Alma had scripted the feat in the 2018 and 2017 IPL seasons respectively. West Indies batter Chris Gayle had hit two centuries back in 2011 while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
