IPL 2022: SRH all-rounder Washington Sundar to miss at least next two matches due to hand injury
SRH would want Washington Sundar to regain match fitness sooner than later.
In what can be called a major blow for Sunrisers Hyderabad, all-rounder Washington Sundar is set to miss at least the next two games after suffering split webbing in his bowling hand. The same was confirmed by the team’s head coach Tom Moody. Notably, Washington has been SRH’s lone spinner in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and his injury has left a significant void in the team.
After a poor outing in SRH’s opening fixture against Rajasthan Royals, where he was taken apart for 47 in three wicketless overs, he bounced back and picked up four wickets in the next three games with his economy rate being even below six. The southpaw has also been handy with the bat lower down the order. Hence, SRH would want him to regain match fitness sooner than later.
We must monitor Washington Sundar’s injury over the next two-three days: Tom Moody
Meanwhile, Sundar, on Monday (April 11), couldn’t complete his quota of four overs against Gujarat Titans due to his injury. He bowled three wicketless overs in the game and conceded just 14 runs, which proved to be crucial as the Titans were restricted to a below-par total of 162/7 in their allotted 20 overs. SRH went on to win the contest by eight wickets. Meanwhile, Moody stated that Sundar’s injury will be monitored over the upcoming two-three days.
“Washington has torn the webbing in his right hand, between his thumb and first finger,” Moody said after the match. “We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn’t a significant blow. I’d imagine it’d take probably a week or so to settle down,” he added.
Meanwhile, leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, and left-arm spinning all-rounder Jagadeesha Suchith are the frontrunners to replace Sundar in the playing XI. Notably, Abdul Samad, one of SRH’s three retentions, can also chip in with his part-time leg-spin. Not to forget, South African international Aiden Markram is also a handy sixth-bowling option.
Meanwhile, Tom Moody also confirmed that Rahul Tripathi’s injury, which forced him to retire hurt midway through the match isn’t a serious one. “He’s fine, he’s just getting cramped,” Moody said.
“It’s humid conditions and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs. That is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us,” he added.
