New entrants Gujarat Titans (GT) have lost their second consecutive match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Their recent loss came against the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 6 (Friday). It was a close contest, however, some disciplined bowling from the Men in Blue and Gold ensured that MI won their second match in a row.
GT skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. MI openers, skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, gave a blistering start to the five-time champions. However, their scoring rate came to a halt as skipper Rohit was scalped by Afghanistan bowler Rashid Khan. Wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan perished soon after.
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma got starts, but could never manage to continue with the bat. All-rounder Daniel Sams and Kieron Pollard could not get going as well. However, it was Tim David (44* off 21 balls) who gave a perfect end to the five-time champions.
GT gave a tough reply in their chase
In reply, opener Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill gave a perfect start to the new entrants. The duo stitched a 106-run opening stand before both were scalped by Murugan Ashwin. Skipper Hardik Pandya and Sai Sudharsan did their best to chase down the target. However, it was not enough for the Titans as wickets fell in clusters towards the end.
For MI, M Ashwin and Kieron Pollard were the successful bowlers, and two wickets resulted in run-outs. MI batter David was adjudged the Player of the Match for his excellent innings with the bat.
Despite losing two consecutive matches, GT remain at the top of the points table. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) complete the top four teams in the table.
