IPL 2022: Updated Points Table, Orange and Purple Cap lists after GT vs SRH
Gujarat Titans clinched a last-ball thriller against Sunrisers Hyderabad to the top spot in the points table.
The Gujarat Titans registered a five-wicket win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 40 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 27. The last-ball thriller helped GT in retaining their top spot in the points table with seven victories from eight matches along with 14 points and an NRR of 0.371.
GT skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first. SRH were reduced to 44/2 in the powerplay before Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram carried out the rescue act with a 96-run stand for the third wicket. Sharma scored 65 runs off 42 deliveries before his dismissal. The Orange Army then suffered a batting collapse, but Markram single-handedly anchored the innings and propelled his side to a stiff total of 195/6. He scored a 40-ball 56.
Umran Malik’s fifer goes in vain
In reply, openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation with a 69-run opening stand before the former was castled by a wonderful delivery from speedster Umran Malik. The youngster wreaked havoc by accounting for captain Pandya and a well-set Saha for a quickfire 38-ball 68.
The emerging pacer showed no signs of slowing down and got the better of David Miller and Abhinav Manohar to complete his maiden five-wicket haul. Thus, he completely broke Gujarat’s backbone and ensured that Hyderabad were well on course for a sixth consecutive win.
SRH were still in the driver’s seat as the match went down to the wire with GT needing 22 runs from the final over. The ball was given to Marco Jansen who was impressive in the last game against the southern rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore. Unfortunately both for him and Hyderabad, he got it all wrong as he was put under pressure right away by hard-hitters Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia. The duo clobbered Jansen for four sixes in an over and this time, for a change, it was Rashid who got the job done for his team by playing the finisher’s role to perfection.
