IPL 2022: Updated Points Table, Orange and Purple Cap lists after RCB vs GT
GT were blown away by Kohli and Maxwell's batting masterclass
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) thrashed the new entrants Gujarat Titans in their final group stage encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 19 (Thursday). A batting masterclass from the run-machine Virat Kohli ensured that the table toppers never stood a chance in front of the Red Army.
GT skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to have a bat first. Opener Shubman Gill failed yet again as he scored just a solitary run. Matthew Wade was involved in a controversial decision, before captain Pandya and Wriddhiman Saha steadied GT’s ship. Some late flourish from the South African batter David Miller and star Rashid Khan ensured that the Titans finish on 168/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
For RCB, pacers Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, and Wanindu Hasaranga were the successful bowlers. RCB premier pacer Harshal Patel could bowl only one over, conceding just six runs in it, as he apparently suffered a split webbing on his bowling hand and had to leave the field for treatment.
GT bowlers had no reply for RCB openers
Chasing 169, the Red Army openers skipper Faf du Plessis and former captain Virat Kohli came all guns blazing on the GT bowlers. The duo stitched an excellent opening partnership of 115 runs before Du Plessis was scalped by Rashid. Kohli followed him to the pavillion after a couple of overs. However, Maxwell was not letting the GT bowlers settle as he smashed 40 runs in just 18 balls and sealed the game for the Red Army with eight balls to spare.
Apart from Rashid Khan (two wickets), none of the GT bowlers managed to scalp a wicket for their side as they were completely hammered by the trio of Du Plessis, Kohli and Maxwell. To note, skipper Pandya was the most expensive bowler amongst bowlers who bowled at least two overs, giving away runs at an economy of 11.66.
After RCB’s victory tonight, Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are knocked out of the tournament. Meanwhile, GT, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and RCB complete the top four teams in the points table.
