The Royal Challengers Bangalore were clinically outplayed by the Punjab Kings by 54 runs in Match 60 of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on May 13. By the virtue of this emphatic win, not only do Punjab keep their playoff hopes alive but have also put Bangalore’s qualification scenario in a spot of bother with one league game left. At the same time, PBKS did the double over RCB as well having got the better of them by five wickets in the reverse fixture.
RCB skipper Faf du Plessis called it right at the toss and elected to bowl first. However, Punjab did not mind as openers Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan made merry on a good batting surface and stitched a 60-run opening stand. Bairstow registered his second consecutive half-century before being dismissed for a blistering 29-ball 66. While the batters that followed could not make much of an impact, Jonny Bairstow’s countryman Liam Livingstone took up the responsibility in the middle-order and took the attack to the Bangalore bowlers. He scored a solid 70 runs from 42 deliveries that powered PBKS to a mammoth 209/9.
For RCB, medium-pacer Harshal Patel starred with the ball in hand with figures of 4/34 while Wanindu Hasaranga picked up 2/15. Glenn Maxwell and Shahbaz Ahmed starred with a wicket each.
Scoreboard pressure gets the better of RCB
In reply, the Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to a decent start and things did look good at one point but, Virat Kohli’s dismissal turned out to be a vital blow as they lost their top order in no time. The onus was now on the middle-order that has been their backbone throughout the season and even though Rajat Patidar (26) and Glenn Maxwell (35) got starts, they failed to make it matter as the steep asking rate eventually got the better of them. Bangalore were eventually restricted to 155/9.
As far as the bowling is concerned, Kagiso Rabada starred with figures of 3/21 while Rishi Dhawan and Rahul Chahar picked up two wickets apiece while Harpreet Brar and Arshdeep Singh contributed with one each.
