The defending champions Chennai Super Kings beat southern rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs in Match 22 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 12. By the virtue of this win, CSK have finally managed to add the first points to their tally this season having lost their first four matches.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to field first. His decision seemed to be spot on when CSK were reduced to 36/2 in the seventh over. However, all-rounder Shivam Dube and veteran batter Robin Uthappa had other ideas as they initially began on a cautious note before accelerating once they were set.

The duo added 165 runs for the third wicket. Dube scored 95* runs from 46 deliveries at an outstanding strike rate of 206.5, Uthappa also went on to play a stellar knock of 88 off just 50 balls that propelled the title-holders to 216/4 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Bangalore found themselves on the back foot right from the beginning as they lost their top order including skipper Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, and last game’s hero Virat Kohli cheaply. Glenn Maxwell then tried to show some resistance before being castled by skipper Ravindra Jadeja for a 11-ball 26.

Just when it appeared that the three-time finalists would suffer a humiliating defeat by a huge margin, veteran Dinesh Karthik came to the rescue and played a valiant knock along with some much-needed support from Shahbaz Ahmed who scored 41 runs from 27 deliveries, and Suyash Prabhudessai who contributed with an 18-ball 34. All hopes were pinned on Dinesh Karthik when the other two were dismissed and as the asking rate got steeper.

Nonetheless, the Tamil Nadu cricketer’s innings came to an abrupt end courtesy of an unbelievable stunner from Ambati Rayudu in the 18th over. He scored a quickfire 34 runs from 14 balls at an outstanding strike rate of 242.9. Royal Challengers Bangalore were eventually restricted to 193/9 from their 20 overs.
