Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) completed a comfortable victory over Punjab Kings in Match eight of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The Kings were completely dominated in the match as KKR completed their chase with 5.3 overs to spare.

KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer after winning the toss, opted to bowl first. Punjab had the worst possible start in their batting, as they lost their skipper Mayank Agarwal in the very first over of the match. However, the wicketkeeper-batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa came out all guns blazing as he scored 31 runs in just nine balls, hitting three fours and an equal number of maximums.

Rajapaksa was sent back to pavilion by Shivam Mavi with Punjab at 43/2 in 3.5 overs. Other opener Shikhar Dhawan (16 off 15 balls) was scalped by the Kiwi pacer Tim Southee. Things got bad to worse for the batting side, when they lost three of their batters in quick succession. Liam Livingstone (19 off 16 balls), Raj Bawa (11 off 13 balls) and Shahrukh Khan (0 off 5) all of them couldn’t get going.

Late finish from South African pacer Kagiso Rabada (25 off 16 balls) helped his side to post a total of 137/10 in 18.2 overs. Express pacer Umesh Yadav once again had a very good outing with the ball scalping four wickets and giving away just 23 runs in his four-over quota.

Chasing 138, KKR were 51/4 in 6 overs

The chasing team had a poor start to their chase. Despite making 50+ during the field restrictions, KKR lost four crucial wickets including Ajinkya Rahane (12 off 11 balls), Venkatesh Iyer (3 off 7 balls), Shreyas Iyer (26 off 15 balls) and Nitish Rana (0 off 2 balls).

However, English batter Sam Billings (24 off 23 balls) and star allrounder Andre Russell (70 off 31 balls) took the charge for batting side and made a mockery of Punjab’s total. KKR completed their chase within 14.3 overs and gained two vital points. For Punjab Kings, spinner Rahul Chahar was pick of the bowlers scalping two wickets and giving away just 13 runs in his four over quota.

With this win, KKR sit pretty at the top of the points table while Punjab Kings have been severely hit due to their poor show and have slipped to seventh position.
