Batting heroics from Dinesh Karthik and Shahbaz Ahmed ensured that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) got their second win in a row. The Red Army managed to come out on top of the Rajasthan Royals in the group stage match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 5 (Tuesday).
RCB skipper Faf du Plessis after winning the toss, invited RR to bat first. RCB had a perfect start as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (4 off 6 balls) was sent packing in the second over. Jos Butler (70* off 47 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (37 off 29 balls) provided some stability, however, Padikkal got out in the 10th over.
Skipper Sanju Samson followed Padikkal soon as he got out on an individual score of eight. On the other hand, Butler, who was playing slow but a steady knock, was joined by West Indian power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer (42* off 31 balls).
At one stage, the overseas duo was struggling to hit boundaries. However, a late flourish from both batters ensured that RR finish on 169/3 in their 20 overs. For RCB, Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel and David Willey scalped one wicket each.
Dinesh Karthik and Shahbaz Ahmed secure victory for RCB
In reply, the opening duo of Anuj Rawat (26 off 25 balls) and skipper Faf du Plessis (29 off 20 balls) stitched a 50-run partnership. However, as soon as Yuzvendra Chahal was introduced, the leg-spinner scalped the big wicket of Du Plessis. Chahal did further damage to his former franchise, as he managed to run out Virat Kohli and also got the wicket of left-handed batter David Willey.
At 87/5 in 12.3 overs, RCB were totally down and out. However, Karthik and Ahmed had some other plans. Both the batters took charge and put the pressure back on RR’s bowling unit. Ahmed eventually got out off the bowling of Trent Boult, but he had done his part scoring 45 off just 26 balls. Karthik, on other hand, remained unbeaten after scoring 44 off 23 balls, taking his side to victory.
