It was a fun Saturday for the cricketing fans, as they witnessed two exciting contests in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The afternoon match was played between the Rajasthan Royals and five-time champions Mumbai Indians, in which the former came on top. In the evening match, Gujarat Titans managed to pip the Delhi Capitals.

In the first match of the day, Rajasthan completed their second victory in the tournament after defeating MI by 23 runs. The Royals on the back of excellent century from the wicketkeeper-batter Jos Butler posted 193 runs after being put in to bat first.

Chasing 193 runs, MI were in trouble right from the start as they lost their skipper Rohit Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh with the team’s score reading 40/2 after four overs. However, Ishan Kishan (54 off 43 balls) and Tilak Varma (61 off 33 balls) took the attack to the opposition soon after getting their eyes in. Both batters stitched a wonderful partnership of 81 runs before Kishan was scalped by Trent Boult. Varma continued his hitting, however, he was also cleaned up by the veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin.

At one stage, MI were at 121/2. However, the five-time champions lost a cluster of wickets with hard-hitters Tim David and Daniel Sams getting out in quick succession as well. As a result, too much of a task was put on Kieron Pollard’s shoulder. However, he was also not at his best as MI completed their 20 overs after making 170 runs and handing a 23-run victory to the Royals.

Gujarat Titans defeat the Delhi Capitals in second match of the day

In the second encounter of the double-header, Gujarat Titans managed to get on top of Delhi Capitals. Skipper Rishabh Pant after winning the toss, invited GT to bat first. The Titans had a very poor start to their innings, as they lost their foreign opener Matthew Wade in the very first over.

However, an excellent knock from Shubman Gill (84 off 46 balls) and vital contributions from Hardik Pandya (31 off 27 balls), David Miller (20 off 15 balls) and Rahul Tewatia (14 off 8 balls), helped GT reach a total of 171/6 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Delhi had a poor start, as they lost three key wickets during the powerplay. However, skipper Rishabh Pant and Lalit Yadav came to rescue their team. The duo put on a valuable partnership 61 runs, before Yadav was caught short of his ground. After the fall of Yadav, Pant also lost his wicket while trying to pull a ball off Lockie Ferguson.

After Pant’s dismissal, it was curtains for the Capitals as none of the other batters, apart from Rovman Powell (20 off 12 balls) managed to get into double digits.  The Titans won the match by 14 runs and got two valuable points to move forward in the points table.
