41*, 12, 5, 48, 1, 12, 0, 0, 9. These were Virat Kohli’s scores in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. His form was turning out to be a big worry for everyone and to make it worse, he had also bagged a couple of golden ducks. Several experts suggested him to take a break while many also backed him to make a comeback. And the man did the latter on Saturday (April 30) returning to form finally against the Gujarat Titans scoring his first half-century of the season.
He was moved up to open the innings in the previous game against the Rajasthan Royals after batting at number three but he could only score nine runs. However, Virat Kohli seemed to be in the zone right from the go against the Titans. He played a couple of gorgeous strokes to get going off Mohammed Shami in the first over of the game. He then followed it up with a scorching cover drive a couple of overs later to indicate that he was getting close to his best.
Not that the innings turned out to be smooth as he mistimed a few shots as well. But the man was determined to score on the day and once set, he made sure to carry on while letting his partner Rajat Patidar score runs at a quick pace.
Virat Kohli gets to his fifty in the 13th over
In the process, Virat Kohli had luck going his way as well with Rashid Khan dropping him off his own bowling. And in the 13th over, the moment came which a billion Indian fans were eager to watch. With a single off Shami, the 33-year-old got to his half-century off the 45th delivery of his innings. There was more relief on his face than delight even as his wife Anushka Sharma, in the stands, stood up in cheering for her cricketer husband.
The entire crowd at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai lauded Kohli for the brilliant knock. Meanwhile, the man himself was relieved after finally scoring his maiden fifty of this IPL season and looked at the sky saying something. The celebration was a muted one from Virat Kohli and the fans will be hoping that the former Indian captain will continue to score runs from now on.
