IPL: 5 Players Mumbai Indians regret for not retaining

Team management is quite a tough job and especially in a tournament like the IPL with no fixed retention policy it becomes even tougher. In a tournament which is a perfect mixture of cricket and entertainment, it’s quite hard to understand the dynamics of IPL auctions and building a team with a limited budget is not an easy job. Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful franchise in IPL and the three-time champions are known for their smart cricketing decisions both on and off the field. But humans are known for making mistakes and the management of Mumbai Indians did commit some big blunders at the auction table and rued it later. Here are 5 players Mumbai Indians regretted not retaining 1. Jos Buttler Jos Buttler. (Photo: IANS) An explosive batsman who can bat anywhere in the batting order along with his excellent wicket keeping skills makes Jos Buttler one of the most sought in limited overs format. The English wicketkeeper-batsman was bought by the Mumbai Indians team ahead of the 9th season of IPL in 2016. In his first year with the Mumbai side, the 28-year-old was not given a fixed batting position and despite getting some impressive starts he failed to play a match-defining innings for the team. The next year was also not good for him as he failed to perform consistently. With Buttler failing to live up to his international stature in the IPL, the Mumbai Indians decided against retaining him in 2018 and he was subsequently bought by the Rajasthan Royals team in the IPL auction. He was initially used by the Rajasthan team in the middle overs in 2018 but he was clearly struggling gainst the spinners in spin friendly Jaipur pitches. The Rajasthan team was also performing badly in the season having won just 3 off their 8 matches. The team management then decided to promote Jos Buttler as an opener and it completely changed the team’s fortune as the Englishman scored five consecutive fifties and helped the Royals to reach the playoffs. He has continued his good form in 2019 so far and will be a key member for the team in the coming seasons. 2. Shikhar Dhawan Shikhar Dhawan. (Photo Source: IANS) The aggressive opener from Delhi has established himself as one of the most consistent and important members of the Indian limited overs side in the past few years. After playing for the Delhi Daredevils team in the inaugural season of the IPL. He was traded to the Mumbai Indians team in exchange for Ashish Nehra ahead of the second season. However, Shikhar Dhawan had a disastrous time with the Mumbai Indians team. He played in 5 games for them in 2009 and struggled to get going and finished the year averaging just 10 that season. He was given more chances next year where he played in 10 games but just scored 191 runs. After two poor seasons, he was released by the Mumbai side and was bought by the Deccan Chargers team for the fourth edition of the IPL. With his new-found consistency and some match-winning performances he soon became a key member of Deccan Chargers. A stint with the Indian team boosted his brand value and he was retained by the new Hyderabad based franchise-“Sunrisers Hyderabad”. He performed consistently for his team and won the IPL with the Hyderabad team in 2016. He scored 501 runs in 17 matches that year and along with David Warner was instrumental in Hyderabad’s title triumph. He currently plays for the Delhi Capitals team and has already played some match-winning innings in the ongoing season of the IPL. 3. Dwayne Bravo Dwayne Bravo. (Photo: IANS) The Trinidadian is a street smart cricketer with both bat and ball and has made a name for himself mostly by playing franchise cricket. Dwayne Bravo is known for his hard-hitting abilities with the bat and his accurate bowling in the death overs. He played for the Mumbai Indians team for the first three seasons of the IPL. Though the all-rounder showed some glimpses of his brilliance with the Mumbai team, the turning point in his career came in 2011 when he was picked by the Chennai Super Kings after being released by the Mumbai team. He was one of the best performers in 2012 as he scored 371 runs at an average of 46.38 and a staggering strike rate of around 140. He also picked up 15 wickets in the season as the Chennai Super Kings finished as the runners-up that season. Since then there has been no looking back as he has become one of the vital cogs of Chennai’s success. When the Chennai team returned to the IPL after a two-year ban he was retained by the franchise in the auctions and he performed quite well in 2018 and helped the Chennai team win their third IPL trophy. He has been the X-factor for CSK in all these years and the Mumbai management definitely commit a blunder by not retaining him. 4. Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell. (Photo Source: Twitter) Popularly known as the “Big Show”, Glenn Maxwell is one of the most unconventional and destructive batsmen in limited overs cricket. He was the costliest player in 2013 IPL auctions as he was bought by the Mumbai Indians team for 1 million USD. Despite having paid a hefty sum for the Australian, Glenn Maxwell was under-used by the Mumbai team and mostly spent his time warming the bench throughout the tournament in a star-studded Mumbai team. He was released next year by the franchise and was picked by the Kings XI Punjab in 2014. He scored 552 runs with 7 fifties and three 90+ scores that year as Kings XI Punjab finished as the runners-up in 2014. Since then he has played some memorable innings in the IPL and has also established himself as a key member of the Australian team. 5. Yuzvendra Chahal Yuzvendra Chahal mumbai indians. (Photo Source: Twitter) The leg spinner from Haryana has risen rapidly through the ranks in limited overs format in the last few years. He was initially spotted by the Mumbai management and was offered a contract by them in 2011. He stayed with the franchise for three years but was never given a consistent run by the team. With limited opportunities, he failed to impress in his initial years and was subsequently released by the Mumbai team after 2013. He was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 and for the first time in his IPL career, He played all the matches in a season as the Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli was highly impressed by the youngster. He has over the years established himself not only in the RCB team but also as a key member of the Indian limited overs side. In 2018, Yuzvendra Chahal also went past Vinay Kumar to become the leading wicket-taker for the Bangalore team. The Mumbai Indians definitely missed a trick by not sticking with the bowler as they have failed to find a frontline spinner other than Harbhajan Singh for their team.
