IPL: 5 Players who once played for Mumbai Indians

When we talk about the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians is a name you cannot ignore. Owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani and his Reliance Industries, it is one of the most popular teams of the gigantic tournament along with Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata knight Riders. Champions of the year 2013 and 2015, Mumbai Indians have always had big guns from the world of cricket playing for them including the mights of Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mike Hussey, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga and others. But there were also players who are now forgotten to be once a part of the team. While the Mumbai Indians went onto become a platform to showcase their talents for many there were players who failed to make a mark. Here is a list of few such players who were seen in the royal blue colors of the Mumbai Indians but now are faded memories: #1) Mohammad Ashraful (Photo Source: The Daily Star) The former Bangladeshi international cricketer was bagged by the Mumbai Indians in the year 2009 to the don their jersey. The short right-handed batsman was an inspiration for Bangladeshi cricket for a long period of time. A player considered to be the wonder boy of the Bangladeshi’s, Ashraful has featured in 61 Tests and 177 ODI’s for the national team. His career highlights include the tag of the youngest Test centurion in 2001 as well as an unbeaten 158 against the mighty Indians in 2004. However his IPL career never got a kick start because of his inconsistency. He featured in only one match in the 2009 season where he failed to perform with a score of just 2 runs. That marked the end for the batsman in the Indian Premier League and was never selected since. #2) Andre Nel Andre Nel (Photo Source: Twitter) Andre Nel, the tall, fiery fast bowler who was brought in by the Mumbai Indians in the first season of the Indian Premier League in 2008, has played only a single game for the team. Nel was picked up as a replacement for West Indian cricketer Dwayne Bravo but came back for national duty. The bowler who has been a part of several controversies in international cricket gave away 31 runs from his 4 overs taking 1 wicket in the only match he played for the franchise. Though his performance was not a bad one the bowler did not participate in the rest of the tournament. The South African spearhead has 123 and 106 wickets in Tests and ODI’s respectively but has now retired from the international scene opting to play county cricket for Surrey. #3) Robin Uthappa (Photo Source: NDTV) The former Indian opening batsman, Robin Uthappa has been a member of several IPL teams including Mumbai Indians. He represented the team for a single season which was the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. Uthappa got a fair amount of playing time in his stint at Mumbai Indians as he appeared in 14 matches for the team. The part time wicket keeper made 320 runs in the whole of the season with a highest score of 48. The 31-year-old was purchased by The Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next season where he stayed till 2011. The batsman then went on to represent Pune Warriors in the IPL finally landing up in the Kolkata Knight Rider’s squad in 2014, where he plays currently. The aggressive opener has played quite a few match winning knocks for the Knight riders turning out to be worth the money buy for them. #4) Dilhara Fernando Dilhara Fernando. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Once expected to succeed the legendary Chaminda Vaas in the Sri Lankan squad, Dilhara Fernando’s career has not lived up to the expectations both in the international level and the Indian Premier League. The tall pacer wore the Mumbai jersey for three seasons of the tournament starting from 2008.T he 37 year old is still an active professional in cricket for his country but now finds himself out of the first team in all three formats. Though the bowler did not perform badly in the big money league, luck was never on his side. He took up 17 wickets from the 10 matches he got to play with a best of 4 wickets giving away 18 runs. He reached his IPL career best against the Royal Challengers Bangalore which saw them get bundled out for a relatively low score. #5) Ashish Nehra Ashish Nehra & Robin Uthappa. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Ashish Nehra is an example of desire and hunger in world cricket. The long-serving Indian bowler made a historic comeback into the national after being out of the big scenario for long. The lanky pacer was also a part of the Mumbai team in the ever so popular tournament’s opening season. Quite unfortunately, his term with the franchise has been something he would like to forget. Managing only 12 wickets from 14 matches, Nehra could not impress the team owners and his fans. The management released him the next year but the player has had his share of luck as he never got the tag of being unsold. The 37-year-old has gathered a lot of experience playing for too many IPL teams which include Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings, Pune Warriors and Sun Risers Hyderabad. Though his IPL career has been infected by injuries his career best display came in 2015 for the Chennai Super Kings picking up 4 wickets for 10 runs.
