IPL 2025: 5 released players who might go unsold in auction
After three exciting seasons of intense action in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 2025 edition is set to offer a lot of surprises as the teams will get an opportunity to revamp their squads while retaining some of their key players in the mega-auction. To make matters more interesting, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has increased the auction purse from INR 100 crore to INR 120 crore.
The IPL Governing Council also announced the revival of the Right To Match (RTM) card and the Uncapped Player Retention rules to add more dimensions to the mega-auction. The latter rule also allows Chennai Super Kings to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore. This leaves the five-time champions with a significant amount in their auction purse to fill the remaining slots.
Franchises will have to dish out INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore for the first three retentions. If they wish to retain two more players, they will have to pay INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore, respectively. If a team doesn't want to retain any player, they will be able to enter the auction with six RTM cards. However, if a team wishes to retain six players, which is a maximum, no more than two uncapped players can be held onto.
Strict rules have also been placed for foreign players. They have to register for the mega-auction in order to be eligible for the mini-auction next year.
As per reports, the IPL 2025 auction is set to be held in December 2024. The venue for the event will be revealed in November. Some reports have suggested that the auction could be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
