India’s right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm spinner Shahrukh Khan becomes the most expensive uncapped Indian player in IPL auction for the upcoming 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), being hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on February 18 in Chennai. Punjab Kings (previously known as Kings XI Punjab) was successful in buying the Indian middle-order batsman for a whopping amount of INR 5.25 crore.

Ahead of IPL auction, Shahrukh Khan was seen as one of the hottest prospects among the uncapped players as he had delivered a scintillating performance in the just-concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 and had played a vital role in helping Tamil Nadu win the title.

In a tense chase in the quarter-final against Himachal Pradesh, the explosive right-hander hit an unbeaten 40 off 19 to take his team over the line. In 31 T20 games, Khan has scored 293 runs at an average of 18.3 and strike rate of 131.4.

Shahrukh khan had four franchises going behind him in IPL auction

Coming to the auction table, the 25-year-old Shahrukh khan saw teams like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) going behind him and getting indulged in an intense bidding war. However, Punjab was successful in having the last laugh as they managed to buy the Indian finisher at a stunning amount of INR 5.25 crore.

The inclusion of Shahrukh can be considered as a masterstroke for Punjab as in the previous year they had struggled to finish their batting innings properly after Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell had failed to live up to the expectations. Twitterati came up with hilarious memes and content to express their views on this expensive buy by Punjab Kings.

This was the second time the middle-order batsman had entered in the IPL auction. He had registered his name for IPL 2020 too but no franchise had shown interest in the all-rounder which had left him disappointed. Speaking about the same, Shahrukh had said, “I was a bit disappointed last year but I overcame it really well. I think it will eventually happen and I can’t be giving too much importance to that.”
