After India&#8217;s victory in the inaugural World T20 in 2007, the craze for the shortest format of the game among the cricket lovers was at its peak in India. <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ramesh-powar-denies-reports-on-his-meeting-with-bcci-officials/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BCCI</a> saw this as a business opportunity and announced the launch of the lucrative Twenty20 cricket competition called the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2007. Then BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi is said to be the mastermind behind the idea of IPL.

The first edition of the IPL was played in 2008. The competition witnessed some eventful matches with a nail-biting final between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. The Royals who were considered as one of the weakest teams held its nerves and won the title. The event was a huge success and it was a two-month cricket fair for the followers of the game and players, franchise owners.

BCCI made a huge amount of money of it. Since the format was new to everyone around the world, it was difficult for the teams to perform amidst huge crowd and pressure. Here, the role of the teams&#8217; captains was really important as he was the one to make the right decisions on the field.

The right-handed batsman, after his retirement in 2013 from all forms of cricket, has been involved in philanthropist activities alongside owning Indian Super League franchise Kerala Blasters for three years. In its three-year existence, the Blasters have been part of two ISL finals and commands arguably the most fan-following among any side in the league. Little Master is currently the UNICEF ambassador for Hygiene and Sanitation. He is also involved in ‘Spreading Happiness,’ a project that “provides electricity to deprived areas.”

They won 7 games and lost 6 games out of 14 while one ended in No Result in the league stage. Delhi lost to Rajasthan in the semifinals.

RCB, a team owned by beer baron Vijay Mallya, was captained by Mr dependable Rahul Dravid in 2008 IPL. The team had a forgettable IPL. He alongside his wife Sailaja took forward his philanthropic work of paying back to the society by launching a foundation &#8216;VVS Foundation&#8217; concerned with students who are economically and socially backwards. Kings XI Punjab, the franchise co-owned by Bollywood actress <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/kings-xi-punjab-owner-preity-zinta-calls-for-legalising-betting-in-the-ipl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Preity Zinta</a>, had a phenomenal inaugural IPL under the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh. They reached the semi-finals by ending second in the points table with 10 wins out of 14 games. However, they lost to Chennai Super Kings in the semi-final. Yuvraj Singh, India&#8217;s hero in the World T20, recently got married to his girlfriend <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/hazel-keech-discloses-yuvraj-singhs-biggest-drawback/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hazel Keech</a>. The left-handed batsman, who last played an international match in June 2017, is currently playing for Punjab Ranji team and is hoping to make a comeback to the international side for the next year&#8217;s World Cup.

Last year, he played for Punjab in the IPL and is one of the players released by the franchise. At the 2014 IPL auction RCB bought Yuvraj for an all-time high price of 14 crores and, in 2015, the Delhi Daredevils bought him for 16 crores making him the most expensive player to be sold in the IPL. Kings XI Punjab, the franchise co-owned by Bollywood actress <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/kings-xi-punjab-owner-preity-zinta-calls-for-legalising-betting-in-the-ipl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Preity Zinta</a>, had a phenomenal inaugural IPL under the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh. They reached the semi-finals by ending second in the points table with 10 wins out of 14 games. However, they lost to Chennai Super Kings in the semi-final. Yuvraj Singh, India’s hero in the World T20, recently got married to his girlfriend <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/hazel-keech-discloses-yuvraj-singhs-biggest-drawback/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hazel Keech</a>. The left-handed batsman, who last played an international match in June 2017, is currently playing for Punjab Ranji team and is hoping to make a comeback to the international side for the next year’s World Cup.
Last year, he played for Punjab in the IPL and is one of the players released by the franchise. At the 2014&nbsp;IPL auction&nbsp;RCB bought Yuvraj for an all-time high price of&nbsp;14 crores&nbsp;and, in 2015, the Delhi Daredevils&nbsp;bought him for&nbsp;16 crores making him the most expensive player to be sold in the IPL. After India&#8217;s victory in the inaugural World T20 in 2007, the craze for the shortest format of the game among the cricket lovers was at its peak in India. <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ramesh-powar-denies-reports-on-his-meeting-with-bcci-officials/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BCCI</a> saw this as a business opportunity and announced the launch of the lucrative Twenty20 cricket competition called the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2007. Then BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi is said to be the mastermind behind the idea of IPL.
The first edition of the IPL was played in 2008. The competition witnessed some eventful matches with a nail-biting final between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. The Royals who were considered as one of the weakest teams held its nerves and won the title. The event was a huge success and it was a two-month cricket fair for the followers of the game and players, franchise owners.
BCCI made a huge amount of money of it. Since the format was new to everyone around the world, it was difficult for the teams to perform amidst huge crowd and pressure. Here, the role of the teams&#8217; captains was really important as he was the one to make the right decisions on the field.
All the captains did a wonderful job in leading their teams which were able to perform and hence lift the popularity of the format. Let&#8217;s have a look at how the teams fared in the inaugural edition of IPL and what the then captains are doing nowadays:

Mumbai Indians, a franchise owned by <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian</a> business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, was captained by Sachin Tendulkar in the first edition of IPL. Under the leadership of Master Blaster, the Mumbai based franchise had an average IPL in 2008 as the team could only manage to finish in the fifth position with 7 wins and as many losses in 14 games they featured in.
The right-handed batsman, after his retirement in 2013 from all forms of cricket, has been involved in philanthropist activities alongside owning Indian Super League franchise Kerala Blasters for three years. In its three-year existence, the Blasters have been part of two ISL finals and commands arguably the most fan-following among any side in the league. Little Master is currently the UNICEF ambassador for Hygiene and Sanitation. He is also involved in ‘Spreading Happiness,’ a project that “provides electricity to deprived areas.”

<h3>​Virender Sehwag (Delhi Daredevils)</h3>

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2019-3-players-delhi-daredevils-should-target-in-auction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Delhi Daredevils</a>, a franchise based in Delhi, was captained by Virender Sehwag, India&#8217;s star opener at that time. Delhi Daredevils, under the leadership of Sultan of Multan, did exceptionally well in 2008 IPL as they reached the semifinals. They won 7 games and lost 6 games out of 14 while one ended in No Result in the league stage. Delhi lost to Rajasthan in the semifinals.
Following his retirement, Sehwag has a new career on social media which is to entertain people with his funny tweets and posts.  Nawab of Najafgarh, with eight million people following his microblogging account, is social media&#8217;s new funny man who comes up with funny tweets for everything happening around the world.
He&#8217;s also spread his wings and become a humourist on YouTube, with a show called &#8216;Viru Ke Funde&#8217; that covers everything from how to appease your mother-in-law to how to avoid paying income tax and how to learn English as an adult. The former right-handed Indian opener is also the proud owner of a school in the heart of his home state, Haryana: a school known for the excellence of its sports facilities, among other things.

<h3>​Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals)</h3>

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/shane-warne-slams-victoria-for-not-letting-aaron-finch-open-the-batting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shane Warne</a> was the captain and coach of RR when they won the inaugural IPL by defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final. Rajasthan Royals won 11 of their 14 matches at league stage and finished at the top of the point table with 22 points. They defeated Delhi Daredevils in semi-finals before beating the Super Kings to lift the trophy. Shane Warne, in 2018 was added to the Fox Sports cricket commentary team for the next six years.
The leg-spinner was the mentor of the Royals in the first season. Since his retirement, Warne has been an active person on social media expressing his views about whatever happens around the game of cricket. <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/australia-vs-india-ian-chappell-bats-for-rohit-sharma-to-come-good-in-the-tests/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australia&#8217;s</a> all-time leading wicket-taker, the 49-year-old, recently launched his autobiography &#8216;No Spin- My Autobiography&#8217; covering all the events that happened during his glittering cricketing career.

<h3>​Rahul Dravid (Royal Challengers Bangalore)</h3>

RCB, a team owned by beer baron Vijay Mallya, was captained by Mr dependable Rahul Dravid in 2008 IPL. The team had a forgettable IPL. In the first match in Bangalore, their bowlers were hammered by KKR&#8217;s <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2019-brendon-mccullum-corey-anderson-thank-rcb-after-being-released/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brendon McCullum</a> all over the park. RCB performed poorly under the captaincy of Dravid as they could only manage to win 4 of their 14 matches in the league stage and finished seventh in the IPL just above Deccan Chargers Hyderabad. Rahul Dravid is currently serving as the coach of India A and India U19.
The credit for the U19&#8217;s success can be given to him as he gave up many lucrative offers to continue coaching youngsters. Under his guidance, India U19 side reached the final of the World Cup in 2016 and won the World Cup in 2018. India A is also performing exceptionally well under Jammy, and he is a man with a mission and an objective to guide youngsters and make them match ready in case of an urgent national call. The former Indian captain was currently inducted into the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/icc-signs-up-a-global-partnership-with-bira-91/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ICC</a>-Hall of Fame.

Based in Kolkata, KKR was captained by Sourav Ganguly in the first edition of IPL. The team, owned by King of Bollywood <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/when-yuvraj-singh-and-shah-rukh-khan-funnily-expressed-terror-for-bhai-salman-khan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shah Rukh Khan</a> fared really well in the opening games of the tournament with big wins over Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, the team failed to qualify for the semi-finals and finished sixth in the points table with 6 wins from 14 matches in the league stage.
Sourav Ganguly is currently the President of Cricket Association of Bengal assuming office in 2015. Apart from this, he is also one of the three members (alongside Sachin Tendulkar and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/vvs-laxman-predicts-the-winner-of-the-australia-vs-india-test-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">VVS Laxman</a>) of BCCI&#8217;s Cricket Advisory Committee, which advises the BCCI on cricket-related matters pertaining to the international and domestic games. Dada is also a well-known cricket commentator and expert for Star Cricket and recently launched his autobiography &#8216;A Century Is Not Enough&#8217;.
