The prestigious IPL Emerging Player award is presented to players who impress the most in a season before crossing a certain age group or meeting specific experience criteria. To be eligible, a player must not have played five or more Test matches, 20 or more ODIs, or 25 or more IPL matches before the start of the season. Additionally, a player can win the award only once in his career. So far, 16 Indian players and one foreign player have won the award from 2008 to 2024.
Shreevats Goswami won the inaugural award with RCB in 2008. Rohit Sharma, Saurabh Tiwary, and Iqbal Abdulla claimed the title in 2009, 2010, and 2011, representing Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively. Mandeep Singh, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, and Shreyas Iyer secured the award in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, respectively.
In 2016, Mustafizur Rahman became the first and only foreign player to win the award. Basil Thampi (2017), Rishabh Pant (2018), and Shubman Gill (2019) followed, playing for Gujarat Lions, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans, respectively. Devdutt Padikkal (2020) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021) continued the trend. Besides, Umran Malik (2022), Yashasvi Jaiswal (2023), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (2024) have been honoured with the award.
With the IPL 2025 season underway, several young talents will be eager to perform and bag the Emerging Player award. As the tournament unfolds, it will be exciting to see which rising star shines the brightest and etches their name in IPL history.
