IPL: Herschelle Gibbs willing to become Royal Challengers Bangalore coach
The Proteas batsman played IPL for now defunct Deccan Chargers and had been a champion with the same team in 2009.
With Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) failing to make it to the playoffs for another season, former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs has made himself available to take over as their coach. Royal Challengers ended their IPL season on a good note, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets.
The win helped the three-time finalists give their fans something to cheer about during yet another dismal campaign. It was a fighting performance from the Royal Challengers as they overcome poor starts with both bat and ball to make sure that the season ends on a winning note. Bowling first, the Royal Challengers bowlers were hit all around the part in the initial overs by Wriddhiman Saha and Martin Guptill.
However, Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal helped them bring down the run rate. But the bowlers could not find a way past Sunrisers skipper Kane Williamson as he scored an unbeaten 70 to take his team to a competitive 175 for 7. In the last over of the innings, Williamson had hit Umesh Yadav for two fours and as many sixes to help Sunrisers amass 28 runs.
In reply, the Royal Challengers were off to a disastrous start with Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Parthiv Patel departing cheaply. At 20 for 3, it looked all over for Royal Challengers. However, Shimron Hetmyer finally delivered with the bat and so did Gurkeerat Singh as the two added a record 144 runs for the fourth wicket to guide the Royal Challengers to an impressive win over their fancied opponents.
Following the game, Royal Challengers’ official Twitter handle took to Twitter to thank the fans for their unflinching support throughout another underwhelming season. “Chinnaswamy & Bengaluru: THANK YOU. You Challengers give us goosebumps. Neev illa andhre, naavu yenu alla. Without you guys, we’re nothing,” wrote RCB.
Gibbs’ proposal
While the Royal Challengers ended their season with a win, they still finished at the bottom of the points table. This is the third year in a row, the Royal Challengers failed to make it to the playoffs. And Herschelle Gibbs feels the Bangalore-based outfit would be on the lookout for a new coach to replace Gary Kirsten. Gibbs, who won the IPL with now-defunct Deccan Chargers in 2009, cheekily made the franchise aware that he is willing to become their coach.
“If you guys need a new coach I’m available,” wrote Gibbs followed by a wink emoji.
