Delhi Daredevils is one of the franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) who is yet to win its maiden championship. Last season they could only win five out of their 14 matches and finished as the cellar dwellers of the event. In a bid to change their fortunes around in the next season, the team is likely to draft in former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif.
The 37-year-old is set to join Ricky Ponting, who replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach last season, in the coaching staff. Kaif previously coached the Gujarat Lions in the T20 event as per reports in Mumbai Mirror. Back in 2017, he was appointed as the assistant coach of the franchise and worked alongside retired Australian cricketer Brad Hodge, the head coach.
The seasoned campaigner has also worked with Chattisgarh in Indian domestic cricket. Apart from being a player of the team, he also acted as a mentor. He joined them before the start of the 2016-17 season and was named as the captain after which he played four first-class matches for them next season. Back in July this year, he retired from all forms of competitive cricket.
Kaif’s career in brief
Kaif made his international debut back in 2000 against South Africa in Bangalore. However, he came to limelight courtesy of his stupendous knock against Nasser Hossain’s England in the final of the 2002 One Day triangular series at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The veteran went on to represent his nation in 13 Test matches and 125 ODIs.
His last international match was against the Proteas in 2006 and went out of the selectors’ radar ever since. As far as the IPL is concerned, he plied his trade in 29 matches for Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore, but couldn’t make much of an impact, having scored only 259 runs at an average of 14.39.
