The Indian Premier League (IPL) has revolutionised the shortest format ever since its inception in 2008. With the advent of the platform, numerous teams and players have produced scintillating cricket which has kept the fans by the edge of their seats, witnessing the high-voltage action.
Following the conclusion of the season, players are awarded for their performances in various categories and one among them is the IPL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Started in the inaugural edition in 2008, the award was first known as the ‘Man of the Tournament’ title. However, it was only in 2013 that it was renamed to MVP.
The MVP award is given to the player who accumulates the most fantasy points towards the end of a particular season. The unique scoring system awards players with points for each boundary, six, wicket, dot ball, catch, run-out, and stumping. Notably, a player receives 2.5 points for every four, 3.5 points for six, 3.5 points for a wicket, 1 point for a dot ball, and 2.5 points for every catch and stumping.
Following the conclusion of the group phase of the 17th edition, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Sunil Narine topped the charts with 450 fantasy points in 15 appearances followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli, who has 315.5 in as many outings. Impressively, Sunil Narine (2012, 2018, 2024) has won the award the most number of times followed by Andre Russell (2015, 2019) and Shane Watson (2008, 2013), with two MVP awards each. Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Harshal Patel are the only three Indian players to have won the award in the previous editions. Rajasthan’s Jos Buttler won the award for collecting the most points in the 2022 edition.
