The IPL 2025 season promises a bigger extravaganza as the previous edition has set the bar higher with some breathtaking games. The first half of the season was all for batters and bowlers who did not lose the plot surviving the tornado, came out with flying colours in the second half.

The likes of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma made the big-hitting look like a walk in the park. But the coveted Orange Cap demanded a mix of conventionalism and strategic risk-taking. One batter who turned out to be the harbinger of those terms was Virat Kohli. The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper scored 741 runs in 15 innings to claim the Orange Cap.

Speaking of conventionalism, the youngster who defied the orthodox batter stance, entered as a wild card and stole the show was Australia’s, Jake Fraser McGurk. He was roped in by Delhi Capitals (DC) to fill in the big shoes of David Warner and he did so by becoming the Super Striker of the season. The explosive batter scored at an impressive rate strike rate of 234.4.

The other players to watch out for in the upcoming IPL 2025 are Ashutosh Sharma and Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) big hitter, Ramandeep Singh. Ashutosh playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS) became an out-of-syllabus question for the teams. From viewing him as up for up-for-grab wicket to almost becoming a lawnmower in Mullanpur the batter has come a long way.  

Orange Cap in IPL 2024: RCB's veteran batter Virat Kohli won the Orange Cap with 741 runs

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's veteran batter Virat Kohli won the Orange Cap race in IPL 2024 with 741 runs. Kohli looked at his vintage best last season and carried his team's batting lineup. He even notched up a hundred and scored an unbeaten 113* off 72 balls with the help of 12 fours and four maximums against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 19 in Jaipur. He led from the front having amassed 741 runs in 15 matches with a strike rate of 154.69 and an impressive average of 61.75.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad occupied the second spot in the Orange Cap list. The right-hand batter garnered 583 runs to his name in 14 matches. He was also the first batter to breach the 50-boundary mark in IPL 2024. The 27-year-old scored four half-centuries and one century in IPL 2024.

Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag breached the top four batters list in a season for the first time. The RR batter has become a pivotal asset for the team and scored 573 runs in 16 matches. His strike rate of 149.21 wasn't too shabby either. Besides, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) power-hitter Travis Head was in the form of his lifetime, as he piled up 567 runs in 15 matches. Travis Head boasted a strike rate of 191.55 with an average of 40.5.

• The record of most runs in a single IPL season is held by Virat Kohli (973 runs in 2016 edition).

Rules for Orange Cap in IPL 2025 

• The Orange Cap is awarded to the leading run-scorer of the IPL season.
• The batsman who holds the Orange Cap during the season is allowed to wear it while in the field during the games, as long as he retains the top-scorers spot in the tournament.
• In an event where two or more batsmen are tied on runs, the batsman with a better strike rate is awarded the Orange Cap.
• In an event where an opposition batsman overtakes the tally of the current holder of the Orange Cap, the previous holder is allowed to wear the Cap until the end of that particular innings in which another batsman overtakes him.

List of IPL Orange Cap Winners from (2008 to 2025)

The first-ever recipient of the Orange Cap was Shaun Marsh. The Aussie, who represented the Punjab Kings in the inaugural edition of the IPL plundered 616 runs in the tournament. The first-ever Indian player to win the Orange Cap award in the IPL is Sachin Tendulkar. The legendary cricketer scored 618 runs in the year 2010.

Chris Gayle is the only player to have won the Orange Cap award on two consecutive occasions. The West Indian emerged as the highest run-scorer in the 2011 and 2012 editions of the IPL. Also, Aussie David Warner has won the Orange Cap award the most number of times (three). The other players who have won the award are Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kane Williamson and KL Rahul.

In the 2021 edition of the IPL, the Orange Cap award was won by Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) Ruturaj Gaikwad. The right-hander scored a mammoth 635 runs in the tournament and scored them at an average over 45 and a strike rate of 136.27.

Jos Buttler won the coveted award for the first time in IPL 2022 scoring 863 runs at an average of 57.53 and a strike-rate of 149.05. IPL 2024 is set to begin on March 22. The IPL 2024 schedule is released and the opening game is a blockbuster clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Super Kings will be raring to make their presence felt on the IPL 2024 points table this time around too and establish their supremacy.
