Rajasthan Royals (RR) won a comfortable contest against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 5 of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. With a resounding victory over SRH, the Royals have moved to top of the points table in IPL 2022.
Winning the toss, SRH skipper Kane Williamson decided to field first. However, Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Butler and Yashasvi Jaiswal came out all guns blazing. The openers added 58 runs, that too within the field restrictions with Jaiswal (20 off 16 balls) getting out just after the powerplay.
However, the assault continued as both Jos Butler and skipper Sanju Samson kept hitting the boundaries in almost every over. The wicketkeeper-batter Butler got out against the bowling of express pacer Usman Malik for 35 runs. Skipper, Samson was then joined by talented batter Devdutt Padikkal and he went along with the proceedings as well.
Both Samson and Padikkal stitched an outstanding partnership of 73 runs, before the left-handed batter was cleaned up by pacer Umran Malik with RR at 148/3 at the end of 15th over. Samson also followed suit after making a quick-fire 50. However, due to some sensational hitting by West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer (32 off 13 balls) and supporting role played by Riyan Parag (12 off 9), Rajasthan ended up posting a mammoth target of 211 runs for the Hyderabad.
SRH recorded lowest powerplay score in IPL history
In reply, SRH ended up having an unwanted record under their name as they only managed to score 14/3 runs during the powerplay and recorded lowest powerplay score in the history of IPL. Pacer Prasidh Krishna was unplayable for the SRH batters as he scalped skipper Williamson and Rahul Tripathi.
Despite some late flourish by Romario Shepherd (24 off 18 balls), Washington Sundar (40 off 14 balls) and Aiden Markram (57 off 41 balls), the chasing side could not recover from the early jolts as they finished 149/7 in their 20 overs, handing RR a comfortable victory.
