IPL: RCB franchise sack the support staff including the head coach Daniel Vettori
Nehra continues as the bowling mentor of the team.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one of the strongest teams in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). But for some reason, the team is yet to win the title in 11 years. They managed to win only 6 matches out of 14 earlier this year and finished 6th in the points table despite the presence of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the team. However, following the continuous poor show, the franchise has decided to sack the support staff which also includes the head coach Daniel Vettori.
According to the reports in Bangalore Mirror, apart from Vettori, the batting and fielding coach Trent Woodhill and the bowling coach Andrew McDonald have also been sacked by the Diageo management which owns the franchise. Interestingly, Ashish Nehra‘s position remains untouched and he will continue to be the bowling mentor of the team. Also, Gary Kirsten looks to be the front-runner to take over from Vettori as the head coach.
Kohli to have a say
If the reports are to be believed, Virat Kohli is expected to have his say in selecting the new support staff. Kirsten has previously worked as the batting consultant of the team. Speculations are also rife that the India batting coach Sanjay Bangar is the first preference as the head coach but then he will attract the dreaded conflict of interest clause and will have to give away his position with the national team.
The Diageo spokesperson though refused to go into the details of the decision and went on to say that everything is speculative. However, the sources have confirmed to Bangalore Mirror about the imminent changes after yet another underwhelming season.
Vettori also did not respond when asked about his sacking as the head coach while Kirsten wasn’t available for the comment as he was in forests of Zambia on a holiday.
