IPL: The first ever happenings of Mumbai Indians in the league

Mumbai Indians stand as the most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League for being the only side to win as many as four titles. The MI franchise is known for being slow-starters in every season as they won a title even after losing their first quarter games.

Interestingly, the Mumbai franchise had a similar start to their IPL journey losing each of their first four matches. Three teams registered their maiden IPL win by beating MI during those four games. Their fortunes changed in 2013 when Rohit Sharma was made the captain of the franchise and he led them to four titles in the gap of seven seasons.

Here we look at the happenings of the Mumbai Indians for the first time in the history of IPL:

First ball:

Luke Ronchi faced the first ball of MI in the IPL during the bowling of Praveen Kumar which turned out to be a dot ball. (Over 0.1 – Inns No.1 vs RCB in Mumbai on April 20, 2008)

First run and first four:

On the 2nd ball of MI’s IPL debut, Luke Ronchi smashed Praveen Kumar through the covers for a boundary. The four of Ronchi also opened the account of runs made by MI. (Over 0.2 – Inns No.1 vs RCB in Mumbai on April 20, 2008)

First six:

Sanath Jayasuriya hit the first six of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL during the bowling of Jacques Kallis. (Over 4.6 – Inns No.1 vs RCB in Mumbai on April 20, 2008)

First wicket and catch:

Dhawal Kulkarni took MI’s first wicket in the IPL by dismissing Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Abhishek Nayar took the catch at deep square leg to put an end to Chanderpaul’s innings. (Over 4.6 – Inns No.2 vs RCB in Mumbai on 20th April 2008)

First stumping:

Yogesh Takawale recorded the first stumping in the IPL for the Mumbai Indians to dismiss Graeme Smith in the bowling of Shaun Pollock. Smith got overbalanced during a drive on leg-side and walked down the pitch before Takawale broke the stumps. (Over 2.2 – Inns No. 1 vs RR in Mumbai on May 7, 2008)

First runout:

Harbhajan Singh, with his direct hit to dismiss Matthew Hayden in the 2008 season, recorded the first runout of the IPL affected by the Mumbai franchise. (Over 18.6 – Inns No.1 vs CSK in Chennai on April 23, 2008)

First fifty:

MI’s first fifty of the IPL was recorded by Dwayne Bravo against KKR in 2008. He scored an unbeaten 64 from 53 balls with help of 9 boundaries. (in Kolkata on April 29, 2008)

First century:

The first-ever IPL century of the Mumbai Indians was recorded by Sanath Jayasuriya who scored an unbeaten 114 from 48 balls with 9 fours and 11 sixes against CSK. (in Mumbai on May 14, 2008)

First maiden over:

Sanath Jayasuriya delivered the first maiden over of MI in the league during the game against KKR. He bowled first three balls to Mohammad Hafeez who saw Ricky Ponting getting runout on the first ball and Hafeez himself on the 3rd ball. Ajit Agarkar batted out the remaining three balls without scoring a run. (14th over – Inns No.2 in Kolkata on April 29, 2008)

First hat-trick:

No Mumbai Indians bowler has picked up a hat-trick yet.

First 5-wicket haul:

Lasith Malinga recorded the first 5-wicket haul for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He took 5/13 in his 3.4 overs during MI’s first match of the 2011 edition. (vs DD in Delhi on April 10, 2011)

First win:

Mumbai Indians registered their maiden win in their 5th match of the 2008 IPL where they chased down 138 against KKR for the loss of three wickets. (in Kolkata on April 29, 2008)

First final title:

Mumbai Indians qualified to an IPL final for the first time in 2010 edition where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. (in Mumbai on April 25, 2010)

Mumbai Indians won the IPL for the first time by defeating CSK in the 2013 edition. (in Kolkata on May 26, 2013)
