Former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen feels Indian Premier League (IPL) is a great stage to develop as a cricket for Ben Stokes. Stokes is the most valuable player in this year’s IPL, fetching Rs.14.5 crores from the Sanjiv Goenka owned franchise Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). But he has justified by price tag by exceptional performances both with bat and ball.
The England allrounder recently said in an interview that he is privileged to play in the IPL as it is the platform where you get to interact with the legends of other countries. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) shifted a lot from their previous policies and encouraged their players to play in the IPL this year. Former English batsman Kevin Pietersen feels it is a very good decision taken by the ECB, as England will benefit from it.
Pietersen’s views on the IPL
He feels that IPL is the platform where a cricketer takes his game to the next level and hence, strengthens his character. “He (Ben Stokes) has had the most brilliant campaign. I think everybody knew he was going to play well. He went for a big number, but the big number didn’t affect him. He’s just a free spirit. He goes out there and he’s just enjoyed the occasion. This would have been great for his development as a cricketer, playing with those players.” Pietersen said to Skysports.
Stokes scored over three hundred runs and took twelve wickets in his debut season. His highest score this season is a terrific 103 not out, and best bowling figures of 3 for 18. When Pietersen was asked about ECB’s decision of calling their players back for Champions Trophy 2017 preparations before IPL playoffs, he said, “I think it’s pathetic. An absolute shambles. Stokes should be playing in the semi-final, and the final. The last week of the IPL is a huge occasion. Just speak to him, speak to Jos Buttler, they’ll talk about how much it has helped their development being out there.”
While English cricketers may not be in India, but Kevin Pietersen will be in India. “I’m going to be in Mumbai for the semi-final on Tuesday and I’m excited by that as a commentator – that stadium is electric,” KP said.
He feels every cricketer from England must try to go to India and play the IPL, so as to make friends in India and get accustomed to the sub-continental conditions. He feels that getting accustomed to the sub-continental conditions will help England in the long run.
