Bangladesh finally broke their jinx of tournament finals as they defeated Windies in the Tri-Series final by five wickets during a rain-affected game. Windies were cruising at 131/0 after 20.1 overs before rain reduced the game to 24 overs-a-side affair. The Caribbean team could only add 21/1 in 3.5 overs after the resumption and set a target of 210 through DLS revision. Soumya Sarkar’s 27-ball fifty at the top and Mosaddek Hossain’s unbeaten 24-ball 52 at the end helped Bangladesh chase down the target with 8 balls to spare.

All the major stats and numbers created during Bangladesh’s historic win over Windies:

A first for Bangladesh:

1 – This win is Bangladesh’s first ever victory in International cricket in a knockout match. They featured in as many as nine knockout matches before this losing all those – 4 ODI Tri-Series finals, 2 Asia Cup finals (1 ODI, 1 T20I), 1 CT semis, 1 CWC Quarters and 1 CT Pre-Quarters.

2 – Only the 2nd time Bangladesh won a multi-team tournament in International cricket. They defeated Canada and Bermuda in the Associates Tri-Series ahead of the 2007 ODI World Cup which did not involve a final.

Bangladesh’s fastest ever:

9.32 – Bangladesh had a run-rate of 9.32 during their 213/5 in 22.4 overs. Only one team has batted more overs and maintained a higher RR in an ODI. England posted 481/6 against Australia in 2018 Nottingham ODI with a RR of 9.62. This is also the first instance when Bangladesh scored at a run rate of 7.5+ in an ODI game.

20 – Mosaddek Hossain’s 20-ball fifty in this game is the fastest fifty by a Bangladesh player in the ODI format. He thus surpassed the fifties off 21 balls scored by Mohammad Ashraful against England in 2005 and Abdur Razzaq against Zimbabwe in 2013.

Soumya Sarkar’s 27-ball fifty also in this game is the 5th fastest ODI fifty by a Bangladeshi as Mashrafe Mortaza hit a 26-ball fifty against Scotland in 2006.

A big deficit:

61 – Bangladesh scored 61 runs more than Windies’ total in this game; the highest difference between the 2nd innings and first innings totals in an ODI game. New Zealand scored 65 runs more than Sri Lanka in the 2013 Hambantota ODI. Sri Lanka posted 138/1 in the restricted 23 overs and the target was revised to 198 for the Kiwis.

A record start for Windies:

719 – A total of 719 runs have been scored for the opening wicket by Windies in this series; the first time they had 700+ aggregated in for the first wicket in an ODI series/tournament. A total of 696 runs were scored during the 1984/85 B&H World Series Cup across 13 matches.

In fact, the 719 runs are the 5th most runs for the 1st wicket in an ODI series/tournament by any team and the most in a series of fewer than nine matches.

A record series for Hope:

470 – The 470 runs by Shai Hope in this tournament are the 2nd most by a Windies player in an ODI series/tournament in the last 30 years. Chris Gayle’s 474 runs across nine innings during the 2006 Champions Trophy are the most by a Windies batsman in the last 30 years.
