The flight was about to land when the accident happened. After overshooting the runway, it broke into two pieces amidst bad weather.
An Air India Express flight carrying more than 190 people skidded off the runway and split into two on Friday evening, leading to many deaths and injuries. The photos and videos of the debris started doing rounds on social media in no time as people condoled the loss of lives.
The incident took place amid very heavy rainfall in the area around 7:40 pm during the landing at the Karipur Airport in Kozhikode, Kerala. According to reports, more than 30 passengers have been shifted to the hospital and over 11 people, including the pilot, have died in the incident.
Visuals of the accident broadcast by TV channels showed ambulances streaming into the airport started doing rounds on social media. Many individuals including India Prime Minister Narendra Modi rued the incident. “Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” he tweeted. Modi also spoke to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and assessed the situation.

Many cricketers also tweeted about the incident and expressed their grief over the loss of lives. Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Aakash Chopra and many other faces of the cricketing fraternity prayed for the passengers and the staff.
India stalwart Sachin Tendulkar also offered condolences to the families who have lost their dear ones in the incident. Irfan Pathan also condoled the incident while Gautam Gambhir prayed that all passengers are evacuated safely as soon as possible.

According to reports, the pilot was formerly an Indian Air Force pilot who had 30 years of experience. The co-pilot is reportedly in critical condition. Luckily, the aircraft didn’t catch fire as it would’ve caused more damage to the passengers and the staff. Official confirmation of casualties or those injured is awaited and a helpline (0565463903) has been set up for families of passengers the flight.
