Ish Sodhi may be the No.1 ranked bowler in T20 internationals, but the leg-spinner hasn’t got an opportunity to reveal his potential when it comes to the other formats. Sodhi played an integral role in Knight’s successful campaign in the Super Smash Cup. He is now geared up for the T20I series against Pakistan.
With the IPL auctions around the corner, Sodhi knows that a good performance here may help him grab a good deal. The 25-year old spoke about the auctions, his top spot in the ICC rankings and his variations while toppling the batsmen. He kept his base price as 50 lakhs.
IPL auctions are completely out of your control
Of the 24 Kiwis to go under the hammer, Sodhi is among the favourites to be picked. When asked about his aspirations, Sodhi mentioned that he was nervy for the first time. However, later he realized that it was completely out of his control. Hence, he just focused on working hard and achieving results.
“The best way I’ve ever heard it described is Corey Anderson saying you’re like a car being auctioned. Last year was my first time in the auction so I was a little bit more nervy and excited. As you grow you realize it’s completely out of your control and you’ve got to get on with it and do your job as best you can. Results like that will come as a result of hard work.” Sodhi was quoted as saying by The Dominion Post.
Becoming the No.1 ranked T20I bowler gave me motivation to do even better
Ish Sodhi has enjoyed a tremendous record in T20 internationals. He has an outstanding tally of 29 wickets from just 18 matches. He has made life difficult for the opposition by spinning a web around them. His economy of 6.89 is a sublime proof of the same.
“When I got told I was No.1 in the world I could have stayed there. But it gave me motivation to get even better. Putting the ranking aside, being able to contribute in all facets of the T20 game is the opportunity that I’ve got. It will help me get back into those other sides and that’s a really important goal for me. While having No 1 is a really proud achievement, there’s a lot more out there for me.”
Ever since the inception of T20 leagues, it’s been a must for any bowler to have variations. Ish Sodhi explained it’s importance and also praised his partner Mitchell Santner. He further spoke about how he can introspect in order to develop his game.
“For legspin it’s the ball that goes away, the ball that goes in and the ball that goes straight. Different pace is crucial these days. Santner’s carrom ball is amazing but the one I really enjoy watching is the slow, wide one he bowls that always seems to be on a length but inside the wide line. If I can bring that into my game I could get even better.”
Talking about the Pakistan series, Sodhi conceded that Pakistan were a tough side when the play with complete freedom. Thus, T20I is going to be one platform where they’ll be challenging. The series commences from tomorrow and is expected to be an exciting contest.
